FATALITY WRECK IMPACTS U.S. 287 SATURDAY — Emergency crews worked a major accident that appeared to involve at least one fatality on U.S. 287 near County Road 2395 between Decatur and Alvord Saturday night. The multi-vehicle wreck occurred just before 10 p.m. and involved a semi. Northbound travel on U.S. 287 was impacted for hours as crews worked the accident through the early hours of Sunday morning. The Texas Department of Public Safety had not released any information on the wreck as of Monday morning. See wcmessenger.com for updates.

FOERSTER TAKES EAGLE MOUNTAIN-SAGINAW POSITION — After four seasons with the Decatur Lady Eagles, volleyball coach Catherine Foerster is departing to lead a new program. On Friday, Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD announced Foerster as the new head volleyball coach and assistant athletic director for Eagle Mountain High School, which will open next fall. “We are extremely excited to have Coach Foerster leading our Eagle Mountain High School volleyball program,” EMS ISD assistant athletic director Tricia Leavitt said, in a press release posted on Facebook. “She has had great success in the past, and I look forward to seeing our program flourish under her leadership.”Decatur athletic director Steve Huff confirmed Friday that Foerster submitted her resignation before the district dismissed for Spring Break. “The job posting should have been sent throughout the district on Friday,” Huff said. “It will also be posted through the Texas High School Coaches Association and Texas Girls Coaches Association… I would think with the rich tradition of the program, we would get some high quality applicants. Because of our location being close to Metroplex, I think there’s a lot of positives. We want everything solid and hemmed up for our girls as best and as quick as we can. We’ll all get together after the break is over and start to look at applicants.” In four campaigns with the Lady Eagles, she led Decatur to a 119-45 overall record. The team also won four straight unbeaten district titles during her tenure, and finished with a 44-0 record. In her first season, Foerster led the Lady Eagles (32-1) to their fourth overall state title, sweeping Wimberley 25-13, 25-12, 25-19 in the 4A championship match at Garland’s Curtis Culwell Center. The Lady Eagles repeated as state champions in 2022 after taking down Celina, 25-23, 25-10, 25-10.

INJURIES REPORTED IN FRIDAY WRECKS — Two wrecks occurred in the Rhome area Friday evening and two injuries were reported. Just after 5 p.m., units were dispatched to 287 Southbound and Ramhorn Hill Road just south of Rhome. According to Wise County EMS administrator Randall Preuninger, a vehicle pulled out and clipped another vehicle, causing it to roll. One patient was injured and transported to a Fort Worth trauma center. There were major delays as traffic was backed up from the highway exit to Saginaw all the way into Rhome. A short time later in the traffic, a vehicle rear ended another and another patient was transported to a Fort Worth trauma center.

RAIN CHANCES RETURN — There is a 20 percent chance of rain before 11 a.m. today. It will be mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 69. Widespread rain chances and potential severe weather will return Wednesday night and Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER RESULTS — Tied at 1 at the end of regulation, the Decatur Lady Eagles (15-3-1, 10-0) claimed their second unbeaten District 8-4A title after defeating Springtown 5-4 in penalty kicks. Patience English scored Decatur’s lone goal in regulation. Bridgeport (9-9-1, 6-4) closed out league play with a 4-0 win over Castleberry. Pyper Newlin led the Sissies with a pair of goals, while Yaritza Ruvalcaba and Citlali Juarez scored one goal each.

BOYS SOCCER RESULTS — Drew Gam netted a total of five goals to lead Decatur (13-6, 8-2) to an 8-1 District 8-4A finale win over Springtown Friday. Zeke Caldera, Sam Andrade and Tony Pacheco finish with solo goals. David Kranz finished with a hat trick, as Bridgeport (16-3-1, 8-2) knocked off Castleberry in its final league contest, 3-1.

BASEBALL RESULTS — Decatur (8-5) finished 3-2 at the Walker Stallcup tournament last week. The Eagles defeated White Oak (3-1), Wichita Falls (8-1) and Iowa Park (4-1), and fell to Bowie (8-7) and Henrietta (5-3). Bridgeport (2-4) split a pair of games at the Ponder tournament, beating Ponder (7-4) and losing to Collinsville (4-0). Boyd (12-2-1) went 4-1 at the Walker Stallcup tournament with wins over Bells (10-0), Tolar (12-4), White Oak (10-4) and Whitney (6-2). The Yellowjackets’ lone loss was to Whitney (10-4). Paradise (8-5) claimed a 3-1 record at the Walker Stallcup tournament. The Panthers dropped their first game to Brownwood (5-0), but then claimed three straight wins over Graham (7-3), Krum (7-2) and Henrietta (11-2). Alvord (5-4) claimed a 17-9 win over Peaster JV at the Poolville tournament Saturday. Chico (3-4) also beat Peaster JV Saturday, 11-3.

SOFTBALL RESULTS — Decatur (3-12-1) suffered an 18-1 non-district loss to Aubrey Friday. On Saturday, Boyd (16-4, 2-0) picked up its second District 10-3A win with a 15-0 shutout against Callisburg. Abby Atkinson, Mekenzie Wilson, Angelina Sanchez and Taylor Lane finished with two RBIs each. Paradise (9-9-1, 1-1) suffered its first league loss to S&S, 11-1.

DECATUR PD TRAINING — Decatur Police Department will be conducting training at Young Elementary on Monday, March 10, and Tuesday, March 11. Do not be alarmed by heavy police presence at the location.

VETERANS SERVICES OFFICE CLOSED FOR TRAINING — The Wise County Veterans Services Office will be closed for training Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12-13. For immediate assistance, call 800-827-1000 or the Decatur VA clinic at 940-627-7001.

SPRING BREAK — Most Wise County schools are out for Spring Break this week. 

SPRING BREAK MOVIES — Bridgeport Parks and Recreation will present free Spring Break Movies at the Arcadia Theater, 1009 Halsell Street next week. “Migration” will be shown March 12, and “Elemental” will be shown March 14. There will be three show times each day: 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Seating is limited. Concessions will be available for purchase

SOFTBALL — Bridgeport (2-8) returns to the field for a home battle against Glen Rose today at 10 a.m. Boyd will welcome Whitesboro for a District 10-3A battle at 11 a.m. Paradise is on the road at Pilot Point at 11 a.m. Chico (6-6, 0-2) will battle Olney in 9-2A action 1 p.m. at home. 

BASEBALL — Paradise opens District 10-3A with a road battle against Valley View today at 1 p.m.
