EARLY VOTING IN MAY 4 ELECTION BEGINS — It’s time to cast your vote on a number of local races and propositions. Early voting for the May 4 city and school elections begins today and continues each weekday through Tuesday, April 30. Polls will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Both early voting and election day voting locations will depend on where you live, as voting will be at eight locations around the county. “Just a reminder that your early voting and Election Day location will be the same for this election,” Wise County Elections Administrator Sabra Srader said. “Please check your voting precinct and refer to our website for your polling location, dates and times.” The ballot includes contested school board races in Boyd, Decatur and Northwest; contested city council or mayor races in Boyd, Decatur, Lake Bridgeport, Rhome and Runaway Bay; school bond elections in Boyd, Bridgeport and Chico; city bond propositions and a tax rollback election in Rhome; a sales and use tax election in Wise County Emergency Services District No. 1; and director elections in two water districts: Walnut Creek SUD and Wise County Water Control and Improvement District No. 1. RAIN REPORT — Some areas of Wise County received nearly 3 inches of rain over the weekend. Rainfall totals included 2.9 inches in Greenwood, 2.66 in Alvord, 2.21 in Decatur, 2.15 in Bridgeport and 1.9 in Cottondale. Saturday’s rain caused a few issues on the roadways, particularly on U.S. 81/287 in the Alvord and Decatur areas with multiple reports of cars hydroplaning on the slick roads. Today’s forecast calls for sunny skies with a high of 71 and a low of 54.

DISD TO HIRE VOLLEYBALL COACH — The Decatur ISD Board of Trustees are set to hire the next leader of the Decatur Lady Eagle volleyball program this morning. Trustees were to meet in a special meeting scheduled for 8:15 a.m. The lone action item to be addressed after closed session is to “consider and take possible action on the employment of professional personnel for the 2024-2025 school year.” Decatur athletic director Steve Huff confirmed Saturday that a new coach will be hired at the meeting. The new hire will replace former coach Catherine Foerster, who departed Decatur last month to become the first head coach and assistant athletic director at Eagle Mountain High School, which will open its doors in the 2024-25 school year.

BOYD BOIL WATER NOTICE — Due to a damage of a water main Friday, areas east of Farm Road 730 on Texas 114 were placed on a boil water notice. All water should be boiled prior to consumption.

BOYD ISD TO VOTE ON POTENTIAL SRO CHANGES — The Boyd ISD board of trustees tonight are expected to consider a proposal partnering with the Boyd Police Department to implement a new plan for school resource officers at its campuses later this month. Last month, trustees heard a presentation from BPD lieutenant Ryan Erwin and Boyd City Administrator Dwayne Taylor asking the district to consider using local law enforcement officers as SROs instead of Wise County Sheriff’s Office deputies. The meeting is at 6:30 at the Boyd ISD Administration Board Room. Read more about the proposal online here.

JP1 OFFICE CLOSED — Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Jan Morrow’s office will be closed for training Tuesday through Thursday this week.

DISTRICT TO HONOR KYLE — Decatur ISD will dedicate the road behind Eagle Stadium at Collins Street as Ashley White Kyle Drive during a ceremony tonight at 6.

MYERS SWINGS BACK TO STATE — In his junior campaign, Boyd’s Cash Myers punched his ticket back to the 3A state tournament. Myers swung for 150 (77-73) and finished second overall at the 3A Region II championships Tuesday April 15-16 at Oak Hurst Golf Course in Bullard. After finishing tied for 13th in his first state appearance last year, Myers will hit the 3A state course April 29-30 at Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin. The championship tournament was moved from Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin due to inadequate green conditions. The Paradise Panthers shot a two-day 694 (346-348) to claim the first alternate team slot, finishing fourth behind Pottsboro (646), Gunter (659) and Troup (661). Levi Clayton placed fourth with 157 (77-80), and was selected as the first individual alternate. Also representing the Panthers at the regional tournament were Zack Mickler (90-74 — 164), Cooper Meyers (90-86 — 176), Will Moffitt (89-84 — 183) and Hunter Murchison (103-109 — 212). Decatur’s Jaden McDaniel, a two-time regional qualifier, finished 53rd with a two-day 170 (82-88) at the 4A Region I tournament April 15-16 at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock. Alvord freshman Rhett Richey carded a two-day 192 (94-98) and tied for 67th at the 2A Region II championships April 15-16 at the Old Brickyard Golf Course in Ferris.

BULLS TAKE SECOND, ADVANCE TO STATE TOURNAMENT — The Bridgeport Bulls shot a two-day team total 588 to secure second place at the 4A Region I championships April 15-16 at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, and earned their first trip to the 4A state tournament since 2022. Bridgeport’s Collin Moody won the individual regional title with 138 (67-71), recording the lowest scores in both rounds. Brady Mann (75-75) and Zach Kehoe (71-79) tied for ninth with 150. Colten Paradise shot 155 (76-79), and tied for 23rd with teammate Cason Lanfear (individual medalist, 76-79). Aiden Green added 156 (71-85) to the Bulls’ score sheet, and tied for 28th. The Bulls will battle on the 4A state tournament links April 29-30 at Legends Golf Course in Kingsland. Bridgeport placed third (640) in their first 4A state appearance in 2022.

BASEBALL RESULTS — Decatur (19-8, 8-2) closed out District 10-3A in a three-way tie with Springtown and Krum following a 11-0 league finale win over Lake Worth Friday. Bridgeport (5-10, 3-7) suffered a 12-2 loss to Springtown in the teams’ series finale, forcing a tie for the league’s fourth playoff seed with Castleberry. In 10-3A, Boyd (25-2-1, 12-0) clinched its fourth consecutive district title with a 12-1 win over Callisburg. Paradise (18-9, 9-3) earned its ninth league win by defeating Pilot Point, 5-0. Alvord (15-5, 11-1) claimed its second 10-2A crown after outlasting Lindsay in the series finale, 11-9.

BASEBALL PLAYOFF TIEBREAKERS — Decatur will face Springtown in a District 10-3A tiebreaker battle 4 p.m. tonight at Sanger High School. A win will force the Eagles to face Sanger for the top seed in a second tiebreaker contest slated for 7 p.m. Bridgeport battles Castleberry in 8-4A’s fourth-seed tiebreaker game 7 p.m. at Haltom High School.

SOFTBALL RESULTS — Decatur (9-17-1, 6-4) tied for second in District 8-4A with Bridgeport after claiming a 1-01 win over Lake Worth Friday. The Sissies (9-13) also finished 6-4 in league play after falling to Springtown, 5-3. Boyd (25-7, 11-3) tied with S&S for second in 10-3A with a 12-3 win over the Lady Rams. Paradise (17-13-1, 9-5) grabbed a 16-1 victory over Callisburg. Chico (11-12) dropped to 5-8 in 9-2A with a 19-3 loss to Petrolia.

SOFTBALL PLAYOFF TIEBREAKERS — Decatur and Bridgeport will square off for a third time this season with District 8-4A’s second seed on the line. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at Bowie High School. Boyd will rematch against S&S in a battle for 10-3A’s second playoff spot 6 p.m. at Denton High School.

REGIONAL TRACK MEETS CONTINUE — Due to inclement weather Saturday, five Wise County track teams will continue competing at regional championships today. Boyd and Paradise will resume the 3A Region II meet at 11 a.m. at Whitehouse’s Wildcat Stadium. Alvord and Chico will continue the 2A Region II championships at 1 p.m. at Springtown’s Porcupine Stadium. Slidell will recommence the 1A Region III meet at 5 p.m. at the University of North Texas in Denton.

FUNERALS — Memorial service for Shirley Louise Morgan Fortenberry, 88, is 10:30 a.m. today at Slidell Baptist Church. Family visitation is 9:30 a.m. at the church. Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is handling arrangements.
