Missing woman found

WISE COUNTY

A 73-year-old woman was found safe and unharmed Wednesday morning at a power plant in Jack County after going missing the day before.

Wise County first responders searched through the night Tuesday for Sharon Thun, who was last seen in the area of County Road 3840 near Boonsville. The woman, who has dementia, was reported missing around 6:30 p.m., according to Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin.

“Her family had looked for her before they called,” Akin said. “She had walked away around 3:30 p.m.”

Members of the Wise County emergency management, EMS and the fire marshal joined the sheriff’s office in the search.

“Citizens were also out scouring the countryside,” Akin said.

Wednesday morning an employee at the Jack County Generation plant off Henderson Ranch Road, near Farm Road 2210, spotted the missing woman.

“She was on the property and one of the employees found her,” Akin said. “She apparently got into one of the buildings and stayed warm through the night.”

Thun’s daughter Wanda expressed the family’s gratitude for the first responders, neighbors and other citizens who assisted in the search for her mother.

“Wise County came out and were really helpful. The Boonsville Fire Department, family and friends went all the way to Poolville. It was amazing,” Wanda Thun said. “No one stopped until 2 in the morning. People in Parker, Jack and Wise counties joined to help. It was amazing, and we have to thank everyone.

“[The first responders] put in a lot of man hours and did everything they could possibly do to find mother. They were even trying to get a helicopter out of Fort Worth.”

Wanda said her mother walked nearly five miles in the 14 hours she was missing. She had kicked off her shoes at some point.

“She was found without her shoes,” Wanda said.

“She is doing well. We took her to the hospital to be checked out.”
