2 teens killed in crash

Two Alvord teenagers were killed in a four-vehicle accident Thursday night on U.S. 380 in Denton County.

Samantha Rogers, 17, and Delaney Mancil, 15, died when their 2007 Pontiac G5 was hit head on by a truck. The accident occurred at 7:11 p.m., just east of Nail Road, according to Lonnie Haschel, Department of Public Safety public information officer.

The girls were third in a line of cars traveling eastbound on 380. A 2004 Dodge Ram, driven by Daniel Studdard, 28, of Little Elm was first in the trio. Haschel said for unknown reasons, Studdard’s vehicle crossed the center line and hit a 2004 GMC truck traveling westbound. The truck was driven by Eric Koch, 34, of Claysburg, Pa.

The truck continued west but due to vehicle damage, crossed into the eastbound lane and side-swiped the second vehicle in the eastbound trio, a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by Gary Sherman, 47, of Garland.

The truck then hit Rogers and Mancil head on. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Others involved in the accident were treated and released at the scene. Haschel said U.S. 380 was shut down until 12:43 a.m., and the accident is still under investigation.

“I can’t imagine what the community of Alvord is going through right now … and their families,” Haschel said. “Our hearts and prayers go out to them.”
