TOWNHOME AGREEMENT APPROVED — The Decatur City Council approved a Chapter 380 agreement with a developer to build townhomes in the proposed, 16-acre Bishop Heights development on Thompson Street and Deer Park. The economic development inventive includes incremental property tax abatement over the course of 10 years and the city waiving inspection and park fees. Per the agreement, the city is requiring the developer, NS Development Partners LLC, to have a building permit by Dec. 31, 2023, with a certificate of occupancy by Dec. 31, 2025. At full buildout, the project is projected to provide housing for more than 700 residents, and the city anticipates the project generating $300,000 in property taxes annually.

EARLY VOTING — More than 500 ballots were cast yesterday on the first day of early voting in the May 6 city and school election. Voting was heaviest at Decatur City Hall (191) and Bridgeport Community Center (124). Early voting continues 8 a.m.-5 p.m. each week day through May 2. A list of voting locations can be found in the current Wise County Messenger, online at wcmessenger.com or on the county’s election website.

MORE RAIN IN FORECAST — It was a drizzly start to the day Tuesday in Decatur, and we’ll continue to have a chance of rain throughout the day. Rain chances will increase to 70 percent this evening. Today’s high will be around 69 degrees with an overnight low of 56.

BASEBALL RESULTS — Chico (3-16-1, 1-9) suffered an 8-7 District 10-2A defeat to Nocona Monday. Caleb House hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

SOFTBALL PLAYOFF GAMES ANNOUNCED — As the second seed in District 8-4A, Decatur (23-7-1) will take on Wichita Falls in a winner-take-all bi-district battle 6 p.m. Thursday at Sunrise Optimist Field in Wichita Falls. Bridgeport (14-14) finished fourth in league play, and will take on Burkburnett in a best-of-three first-round series Thursday through Saturday at Henrietta High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. for all games. In 10-3A, Boyd (21-11) battles Palmer in a bi-district series starting 6 p.m. Thursday at Crowley High School. Game 2 is 6 p.m. Friday, while Saturday’s game (2 p.m.) will be if necessary.

BASEBALL SCHEDULE — Decatur (13-14-2, 7-3) will begin a non-district series against Diamond Hill Jarvis today at 6 p.m. at Diamond Hill Jarvis High School. Boyd (25-4, 12-0) looks to remain unbeaten in District 10-3A, as the Yellowjackets open the Battle of 114 series against Paradise (13-12-1, 8-4) 7:30 p.m. at Boyd High School. Alvord (18-6, 11-1) will host a non-conference contest against Lake Worth at 7:30 p.m.

YOUTH ART ON DISPLAY — Healthy Wise County led by Wise Health System and Wise Coalition for Healthy Children have partnered with Boyd ISD and Slidell ISD for the 2nd annual youth art contest. This year’s theme is “Children’s Feelings Are a Work of Art” which aims to increase children’s mental health awareness. Artwork will be on display April 24-28 at First Baptist Church of Slidell, May 1-5 at First Financial Bank in Boyd and May 8-12 at Cool Creek Art Gallery in Bridgeport.

HEALTH FAIR — Wise County Committee on Aging and Wise Health System have joined to host a mini health fair 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday at the Owls Activity Center, 1200 N. Miller. There will be blood pressure checks, heart health, Mary’s Gift/breast cancer exam assistance and other resource information.

RETIRED EDUCATORS MEETING — The Wise County Retired School Personnel will meet 11:30 a.m. today at the Decatur Conference Center. Lunch is $14. Guest speaker will be Paradise ISD Superintendent Will Brewer.

ELECTION LETTERS DEADLINE — The deadline to submit a letter to the editor regarding the May 6 election is 5 p.m. today. Letters may be emailed to news@wcmessenger.com.

FUNERALS — Graveside service for Lee Coffman Bryan, 76, of Rhome is 10:30 a.m. today at Sweetwater Cemetery. Hawkins Funeral Home in Decatur is handling arrangements.

SERVICE for Jack Read, 86, of Fort Worth is noon Thursday at Joe T. Garcia’s Chapel. Hawkins-Decatur is handling arrangements.

MEMORIAL for Dianne Lorraine Ballard, 79, of Newark will be held at a later date. Hawkins-Decatur is handling arrangements.

FUNERAL for D. Edward Rich, 84, of Corinth is 2 p.m. today at Hawkins Funeral Home in Bridgeport with burial at Paradise Cemetery.

MEMORIAL service for Barbara Kemper, 83, of Paradise is 11 a.m. Saturday at Hawkins Funeral Home Chapel in Boyd.

SERVICE for Douglas Smith, 55, of Bridgeport is pending at Hudson & Torres Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport.
