A woman was killed and two other people were injured in a two-vehicle accident west of Bridgeport on U.S. 380 Tuesday night.
The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
A Decatur man and woman were transported to Wise Health System by Wise County EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. The man was ejected through the windshield of his truck, and his wife had to be extricated by first responders, according to Bridgeport officers.
The accident occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 380 West and Farm Road 1658 North.
“The white truck was headed eastbound, and the blue car was southbound on FM 1658 North,” said Bridgeport Police Officer Mason Anderson. “The car ran the stop sign. The driver of the truck said he had no time to react, and they collided right in the intersection.
The truck, which was hauling an empty Gooseneck trailer, struck the passenger side of the car. After the impact, the car ended up in the bar ditch on the south side of U.S. 380. The truck and trailer also went into the southside ditch several hundred yards away.
The speed limit in the stretch of U.S. 380 is 65 mph.
The accident shut down U.S. 380 for multiple hours as first responders cleaned up a debris field of more than 100 yards. Traffic was diverted onto FM 1658 through Lake Bridgeport.
Along with Bridgeport Police, officers from Runaway Bay, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Safety responded. Bridgeport, Lake Bridgeport and Runaway Bay firefighters and Wise County EMS also were on scene.
