GREENE

Over the years, I’ve often poked fun at my colleague and friend Kristen Tribe for her dreaming up crazy stories and scenarios for us to report on.

Unfortunately, that’s not how we do this job. The events transpire and we report on them.

But as the calendar turns to 2022, I can dream about stories I would like to see splash across the front page of the Wise County Messenger.

Here are a few headlines I hope to see in the next 12 months in no particular order.

No COVID-19 cases reported in Wise County

We are all tired of the pandemic and want to see it end. There is not enough praise for the health care workers and the first responders for their effort in the past two years.

State OKs grant for courthouse renovation

The historic 1896 Wise County Courthouse truly is a gem. But there are plenty of issues that must be addressed, and soon, to preserve the structure. A July announcement of the $6 million grant being secured from the Texas Historic Commission would allow the year-long construction project to start.

Lang named AD, coach

Named the interim athletic director and head football coach just weeks before the start of the football season, Ty Lang did a great job this season for Decatur. He deserves the opportunity to take on the role full time.

H-E-B, Chick-fil-A announce locations

Anytime residents are polled about what they would like to see brought to Wise County, H-E-B and Chick-fil-A are at the top of the list. With the unprecedented growth about to hit the county, let’s fulfill some wishes and bring them both here.

May elections draw record

Voters usually turn out for presidential elections. To me, the local city council and school board elections are more important and have a greater impact on our lives in Wonderful Wise. It’d be great to see a large turnout in May.

Rhome decides on city hall

After two failed bond propositions, Rhome is about to hold a citizen forum about facilities. The city is desperately in need of action on facilities.

Work begins on FM 730

The Texas Department of Transportation has construction on the curvy and narrow road between Boyd and Decatur on the drawing board for 2022. Fingers crossed that it comes to fruition.

No 100 degree days recorded

As I get older, my tolerance for the extreme heat and humidity lessens. I know it’s Texas, but can we keep it at 99 or less? Also, avoiding drought in Wonderful Wise would be great for the local ranchers and farmers.

Plans for surface water solidified

The Upper Trinity Groundwater District is working on a study about future water resources for the growing county. Lakes and reservoirs take years to come to fruition, but it would be great to see some movement on this vital issue facing the county.

All students excel on STAAR

Like students, teachers and parents, I would like to see standardized tests go away. But that’s not happening, yet. Stellar results on the exams would be a nice reward for the hard work of students and teachers, especially after the trying past two years.

Elder makes MLB debut

After a stellar first professional season, Decatur’s Bryce Elder ended the year in Triple A. Here’s hoping the labor dispute in Major League Baseball is settled soon and Elder gets his shot on a big league mound.

Winning lottery ticket sold in Wise County

After missing out on winning the Power ball Wednesday, I can dream. I would likely just settle for the Dallas Cowboys winning the Super Bowl.
