Local athletes advance to regional tournaments

A dozen Wise County tennis players will battle for state berths at regional tournaments next week.

Paradise’s Austin Iglesias and Jax Goodman  punched their ticket to the 3A Region II tournament after a second-place finish second in boys doubles at the District 10-3A tournament April 23-24 at Celina Middle School. 

Iglesias and Goodman fell to Whitesboro’s Eric Vargas and Presley Booth in the finals, 6-4, 6-1.  

The 3A Region II championships are scheduled for May 8-9 at Tyler Junior College. 

Bridgeport’s Jaelyn Jobe qualified for the 4A Region I tournament after defeating Decatur’s Jaden Addington 6-0,  6-4 in girls singles at the District 8-4A tournament April 25 at Lake Worth High School. 

Addington will also advance to regionals as the league’s runner-up. She rallied back to claim a district semifinal win over Krum’s Emily Partida, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0.

The Eagles’ boys double team of London Holmes and Russell Richardson placed second and qualified for regionals. The duo fell to Krum’s Alex Mullings and Sean Bindley 6-4, 6-3 in the finals.  

In mixed doubles, Decatur’s Connor Buisine and Sydney Hayes claimed gold after outlasting Krum’s Mia Rayo Vega and Joshua Hayes, 7-5, 7-5. 

The 4A Region I tournament is slated for May 9-10 at Texas Tech University’s McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.

Slidell’s mixed doubles team of Manny Peralta and Julissa Gonzalez and boys doubles team of Fabian Gonzalez and Nathan Niblett advanced to the 1A Region III meet after securing gold and silver medals at the 22-A tournament, held April 22 at Hamilton Park in Wichita Falls. Scores were not available by the Messenger’s press deadline Wednesday.

The 1A Region III tournament is May 10-11 at the Richland Tennis Center in North Richland Hills.
