Yellowjackets remain unbeaten, climb to No. 1 in THSB 3A poll


After going undefeated in their first two tournaments of the season, the Boyd Yellowjackets have jumped up to the top spot in the Texas High School Baseball 3A state rankings. 

Boyd (10-0) started the season ranked fourth behind Corpus Christi London, Wall and Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, but ascended to No. 1 in the latest poll, released Monday.

The Yellowjackets are coming off of a spotless run at the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw tournament last week. Boyd collected wins against Pecos (18-2), Saginaw (20-5), Lebanon Trail (10-0), Paschal (1-0) and Abilene Cooper (12-1).

In their first showcase of the season, the Yellowjackets also turned in a 5-0 record at the JAG Metals tournament Feb. 19-21, defeating Granbury (6-1), Seminole (14-0), Saginaw (13-0), Dallas W.T. White (14-2) and Chisholm Trail (7-2). 

Boyd hosts the Walker Stallcup Memorial tournament this week, and will take on Whitney (1:30 p.m.) and Stephenville (6 p.m.) Thursday, Eagle Mountain (3:45 p.m.) Friday and Pantego Christian (11:15 a.m.) and Covenant Christian (3:45 p.m.) Saturday. 

The Yellowjackets open District 10-3A play with a series against Callisburg next week. The Wildcats host Game 1 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, and Boyd will host Game 2 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 13. 

Making its first appearance in the state poll, Paradise is ranked 18th in 3A behind Boyd, London, Liberty-Eylau, Iowa Park, Huntington, Jim Ned, Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill, Little River Academy, Gunter, Holliday, Franklin, Shallowater, Wall, Orange Grove, Jourdanton, Troy and Hallettsville. 

The Panthers (8-1) also competed at the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw tournament last week, bringing home a 4-1 record. Paradise suffered a loss to Eagle Mountain (3-0) in its first matchup, but rallied for four straight wins against Abilene Cooper (8-2), Boswell (8-3), Pecos (3-0) and Lebanon Trial (5-1).

Last week, Paradise opened its season with a 4-0 showing at the Baluch tournament, collecting wins against Millsap (25-2), Palo Duro (7-0), Valley View (20-3) and Mansfield Summit (11-10).

The Panthers will also take part in the Walker Stallcup Memorial tournament this week. Paradise will face Covenant Christian (3:45 p.m.) and Krum (6 p.m.) Thursday, Stephenville (1:30 p.m.) Friday and Whitney (11:15 a.m.) Saturday. 

In the 2A poll, Alvord remains ranked 10th behind Centerville, Collinsville, Shelbyville, Stamford, Muenster, Shiner, New Deal, Frankston and Bosqueville.

After a 7-2 win over Petrolia in their season opener Feb. 20, the Bulldogs (4-1) turned in a 3-1 run at the Era tournament last week. Alvord opened the showcase with a loss to Callisburg (10-5), but rallied for three straight wins against Era (7-1), Muenster Sacred Heart (19-4) and Callisburg (6-3). 

Alvord hosts Perrin-Whitt in a non-district contest 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Bulldogs will play in the Poolville tournament later this week, and are slated to face Graford (4 p.m.) Thursday, Era (noon) Friday and Millsap (2 p.m.) and Poolville (6 p.m.) Saturday.
