Despite being hours away from possibly icy roads, Wise County EMS and other area first responder agencies had their hands full with drivers crashing in more ordinary rain conditions Friday morning.
Chief Randall Preuninger confirmed that Wise County EMS responded to three accidents from around 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday. The most severe was a rollover wreck that involved two vehicles two-vehicle collision that involved a rollover near the Wise-Parker County line on Farm Road 920.
Two patients were injured in the T-bone crash near Boonsville. At least one of the occupants had to be extricated and the road was shut down as first responders worked the collision.
Boonsville-Balsora (Wise County ESD No. 2), Parker County Hospital District EMS, Parker County ESD No. 1 and law enforcement also worked the accident that reported near Division Lane, south of Highway 199. Neither wreck resulted in injuries.
Area first responders and the Wise County Office of Emergency Management have been preparing for deteriorating driving conditions from Winter Storm Fern.
A wintry mix of precipitation may begin falling after 3 p.m. afternoon. The WCOEM shared that conditions could deteriorate rapidly tonight.
“It’s looking like the worst is going to start when the sun goes down,” Wise County Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Cody Powell said.
Poor travel conditions are likely to remain through the weekend and early next week.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to dip below freezing tonight and remain there until Tuesday next week, with potentially dangerous wind chills over the weekend. NWS Fort Worth advised that the system could produce heavy mixed precipitation that could bring between .1 to .25 inches in Wise County before temperatures rise above freezing again. Sleet and snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are possible, too.
