Chico’s Jordan Weiland opened the Perrin-Whitt tournament with a clutch performance which garnered state-wide attention last month.
In a first-round contest against New Way Christian Academy Nov. 20, the senior guard finished with a double-double behind 33 points and 13 rebounds, along with seven steals, leading the Dragons (3-3) to a 76-38 victory.
For his efforts, Weiland was recently selected as Dave Campbell’s Week 2 Mr. Texas Basketball Player of the Week.
Weiland — a 2025 All-Wise First Team pick — leads the Dragons in scoring with 32 points per game. He’s also averaging 11.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 4.6 steals and 2.8 blocks.
Chico went 2-1 in the tournament, adding a 69-42 win over Forestburg and a 72-66 loss to host Perrin-Whitt. Weiland and sophomore guard Landon Cuevas were selected as all-tournament players.
The Dragons return to action Tuesday, traveling to face Azle Christian Academy at 7 p.m.
Chico will host the Dragon Classic Thursday through Saturday. The Dragons are slated to face Forestburg and Henrietta Midway Thursday (9 a.m./5p.m.), Quinlan Boles Friday (5 p.m.) and Millsap Saturday (11:40 a.m.).
Next week, Chico starts with a road trip to Valley View 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.
