LARGE POWER OUTAGE AFFECTS DECATUR — UPDATE: Power has been restored as of 10:30 a.m. — Oncor reported a large power outage affecting a large part of Decatur Wednesday morning. Oncor Area Manager Sabrina Easley said the outage has affected 1,650 customers and includes all of Downtown Decatur and areas north. The outage happened around 8:40 a.m. Decatur City Hall is included in the outage area. The city announced that all in-person services at City Hall are temporarily suspended. Online services remain available at decaturtx.org, though some internal systems may be affected. The Wise County Messenger office has also been affected, and it could delay the delivery of the printed Update today.
SLIDELL ELEMENTARY NEARS COMPLETION — Slidell ISD will celebrate the opening of its new elementary school with a ribbon cutting ceremony 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The campus is set to welcome students when they return from fall break Oct. 20. The new elementary was part of a $25.9 million bond package passed by voters in May 2023. The referendum also included a new greenhouse, vocational ag facility, high school kitchen, welding workshop, elementary gym HVAC and secure entrances at the high school.
VOLLEYBALL RESULTS — Alvord (17-16, 3-2) drew first blood in the District 9-2A Battle of Texas 1655 rivalry series against Chico (11-19, 1-4) with a 4-set win Tuesday — 22-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-16. Decatur (33-5, 7-2) snapped its 2-match losing streak with a 7-4A road sweep over Castleberry — 25-11, 25-14, 25-14. Bridgeport (9-24) dropped to 1-8 in league play following a sweeping loss to Lake Worth — 25-17, 25-19, 25-17. Boyd (25-9) improved to 7-0 by claiming a 10-3A series sweep against Ponder in four sets — 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-21. VCA (23-6-2, 11-0) earned its 11th TAPPS 2A District 2 win by beating Nazarene Christian Academy in four sets — 25-15, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15.
ROADS CLOSED FOR TV FILMING IN BOYD — Television production crews will be back in Boyd today filming a television series, according to the City of Boyd. Filming is expected to impact the North Hitt/North Hovey and Dunlap areas in the morning as well at intersections at South Hitt and East Boyd/Morton Avenue. Motorists may notice signage as well as police officers on-site to help direct traffic and manage any temporary detours. It will not impact school traffic.
