SHERIFF’S OFFICE TO PURCHASE ARMORED VEHICLE — County commissioners approved the purchase of a $324,000 armored vehicle for the Wise County Sheriff’s Office Monday, acquiring the first law enforcement vehicle of its kind in the county. The vehicle is intended to improve response to high-risk calls without relying on out-of-county agencies. Wise County Sheriff Cary Mellema said it may also deter conflict before it escalates. “You watch this monster pull up in the front yard, your hands are probably going up in the air,” Mellema said. Built on a Ford F-550 chassis, the Terradyne Armored Vehicles Gurkha MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) is an armored tactical vehicle designed for law enforcement, military and rescue operations, according to the manufacturer. The company said it provides ballistic protection and is designed to shield occupants from high-powered rifles and certain explosive threats. Read more online here.
