SENATE BILL COULD CLOSE LOCAL BUSINESS — Consumable hemp products containing THC may soon be outlawed in Texas under Senate Bill 3, unless the legislation is vetoed by Gov. Greg Abbott. While products used recreationally are the target of the ban, the owner of a local CBD store believes SB 3 has side effects that will put her and many other CBD shops out of business. Dana Brumley, owner of Your CBD Store in Decatur, said SB 3 would effectively criminalize most of the CBD products on her shelves. “Our store will be gone,” she said. Proponents of the ban, including Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, argue that SB 3 is overdue regulation that will prevent powerful THC products, often sold in the form of gummies and other sweet forms, from falling into the hands of children. Critics of SB 3 argue the ban would deprive a pharmaceutical alternative to manage pain, anxiety and sleep disorders from responsible adults, while harming the Texas economy and replacing legitimate businesses with less regulated products sold on the black market. COUNCIL APPROVES SUP FOR PROPOSED LIQUOR STORE SITE — The Boyd city council voted unanimously to approve a special use permit (SUP) for a proposed liquor store site located inside of Boyd Business Park Tuesday. The permit, applied for by Jerry Cate with KCE Builders, allows the builders to market the building — a commercially-zoned property — as capable of selling alcohol and packaged liquor instead of in a industrial zoned area as stated in the city ordinance. The proposed 3,600 square foot building is expected to house a 2,400-square foot liquor store, with the remaining 1,200 square feet listed as retail or office space. The council issued the SUP on the condition that the builder fully bricks the building and provides curb appeal approved by city leaders. The council also approved a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the City of Justin to green-light a feasibility study for the creation of a regional animal control program.
