INJURIES REPORTED IN STRUCTURE FIRE — At least one person was seriously injured in an early morning house fire Wednesday between Boyd and Newark. The fire happened in the 4 a.m. hour in the 400 block of County Road 4659. “It was a two story house, fully involved when they arrived,” Newark Fire Chief Jerry Taylor said. “There was one burn patient (adult female) that was flown by Air Evac Life Team 68 to the burn center in Plano. I will hopefully have more later as this is an investigation.” A nearby camper and several vehicles were also reportedly damaged. Responding fire departments included Boyd, Newark, Rhome, New Fairview, Parker County, Tarrant County ESD 1 (Briar) along with Wise County EMS Rescue 1 and Medic 3.
ELEVATED FIRE THREAT TODAY — A cold front today will bring wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph, and with afternoon humidity dropping to around 30 percent, an elevated fire threat will be in place. The county’s burn ban will be active today. No outdoor burning will be allowed. It will be cooler today with a high near 58 and an overnight low around 30.
BRIDGEPORT TO CONSIDER TURF, TRACK REPLACEMENTS — Bull Memorial Stadium could be getting a facelift in the near future. The Bridgeport School Board Monday discussed turf and track replacement for the athletic facility. BISD Assistant Superintendent PJ Giamanco said the track and turf, which were installed in 2009 and 2013, respectively, are showing signs of wear that could impact safety, performance and maintenance costs. MAY ELECTION FILING PERIOD OPENS — The filing period for the May 2 election for local cities and schools opened Wednesday. GIRLS BASKETBALL RESULTS — Bralyn Peck surpassed the 2,000th career points mark, finishing with 21 to lead Decatur (23-4, 6-0) to an 80-22 District 7-4A win over Springtown Tuesday. Bridgeport (17-11) improved to 4-2 in league play with a 72-23 win over Lake Worth. In 10-3A, Boyd (11-14, 3-2) survived a scare from Valley View, claiming a 48-45 victory to earn its third district win. Paradise (22-4, 5-0) clinched its fifth league win by dominating Pilot Point, 81-11. Alvord (0-25) fell to 0-6 in 13-2A after suffering an 82-9 loss to Collinsville. Chico (15-10, 3-3) fell to .500 in the district standings following a 3-point loss to Muenster, 31-28. Slidell (13-11, 2-4) brought home its second league win by defeating Era, 51-38. VCA (5-9, 3-1) suffered its first TAPPS 2A District 2 defeat with a 51-39 loss to Muenster Sacred Heart.
BOYS BASKETBALL RESULTS — Decatur (8-11, 2-2) drew even in District 7-4A thanks to a 63-58 victory over Springtown Tuesday. Bridgeport (11-13, 1-3) came up short of claiming its second league win following a 1-point loss to Lake Worth, 62-61. Boyd (15-10, 2-1) picked up its second 10-3A victory following a 59-40 home win over Valley View. Paradise (22-4) is 5-0 in league play after beating Pilot Point, 55-20. In 13-2A, Slidell (17-6, 4-0) remains unbeaten in district after earning a 56-43 win over Era. Alvord (10-11) fell to Collinsville 63-42, dropping the Bulldogs to 1-3 in league play. Chico (14-8, 2-2) dropped to .500 in the league standings after suffering a 55-34 defeat to Muenster. VCA (15-6, 3-1) lost its first TAPPS 2A District 2 contest to Muenster Sacred Heart, 41-36.
BOYS SOCCER RESULTS — Decatur (3-0-2) tied Weatherford in its season home-opener Tuesday, 2-2. Calvyn Kemp and Adrian Sanchez netted solo goals.
GIRLS SOCCER RESULTS — Decatur (0-5) dropped its fifth straight contest following a 1-0 loss to Denton Tuesday. Bridgeport (1-4) was blown out by Lake Dallas, 9-0.
OFFICE CLOSURE — The City of Decatur Municipal Court Department will be closed 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday for staff training.
