1 KILLED IN FIERY WRECK — The driver of an 18-wheeler was killed in a wreck Tuesday morning near Chico. The wreck happened around 6:15 on Farm Road 1810 west of Farm Road 1655 near County Road 1450. Initial reports indicate the 18-wheeler ran off the road, crashed into trees and caught fire, according to Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger. First responders found the truck fully involved in flames. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames around 6:45. The driver’s name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. HOUSE DESTROYED IN SALT CREEK FIRE — An early morning fire destroyed a home in the Salt Creek area Tuesday. The fire was reported around 3:30 in the 1200 block of Salt Creek Road. First responders found the double wide mobile home fully involved in flames when they first arrived. The four occupants and pets were able to make it out with no injuries, but the house was a total loss, according to Wise County Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty. Wise County ESD 3-Salt Creek, Cottondale and Paradise; ESD 2, Parker County ESD 1, Wise County Medic 3 and Rescue 1 also responded to the scene with Doughty.
CHICO MAN KILLED IN BRIDGEPORT WRECK — A Chico man died in a two-vehicle wreck Monday morning in Bridgeport. The wreck happened just after 6 a.m. on Texas 101 just north of the intersection with U.S. 380. Bridgeport Police Chief Steve Stanford said a loaded rock hauler was stopped in the turn lane on Texas 101, waiting to turn left to go eastbound at the red light when it was struck from behind by a 2021 Dodge half-ton pickup southbound on Texas 101 driven by 22-year-old Jordan Hall of Chico. “Mr. Hall failed to control his speed and impacted the back of the rock truck at a high rate of speed,” Stanford said. Hall was initially taken by ground ambulance to Medical City Decatur and later pronounced deceased. The driver of the rock hauler, Cesar Castillo, 25, of DeSoto, was not injured.
SWEETIE PIE’S RIBEYES SHUTS ITS DOORS — Sweetie Pie’s Ribeyes in Decatur has permanently closed after 19 years as the comfort-food cornerstone of the Decatur Square. Signage announcing the closure was placed on the restaurant Monday, after its final day of service on Sunday. “It’s a very hard decision, it always is,” said co-owner Joel Vinyard in an impromptu interview with the Messenger Monday. “The truth of it is, the Sweetie Pie’s in Decatur really hasn’t ever been financially successful. And if it wasn’t for it being part of the Babe’s restaurants, this restaurant would’ve closed 15-16 years ago.” Sweetie Pie’s joins Fuzzy’s Taco Shop as restaurants on the Decatur Square that have closed abruptly this year. LADY EAGLES ADVANCE TO STATE TOURNAMENT — Decatur (40-7) claimed its second 4A Division I Region I title under coach Stormi Snider by knocking out District 7-4A rival Springtown 3-1 — 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-14 — in a fourth-round clash Monday at Northwest High School’s Texan Arena. The Lady Eagles will face either Celina or Lindale in the 4AI state semifinals 4 p.m. Saturday at Fort Worth’s Wilkerson-Greines Activities Center.
ELEVATED FIRE THREAT TODAY — Dry, warm and breezy conditions will result in an elevated wildfire threat across the area this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The county’s burn ban is in effect. No outdoor burning is allowed. It will be warmer today with a high around 71 with south southwest wind around 15 mph with gusts as high as 30 mph. Tonight’s low temperature will be around 47.
