LACKEY NAMED ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT — Decatur High School principal Lyle Lackey will move to a central administration role this summer after he was named assistant superintendent of human resources Monday. The school board voted 6-1 to hire Lackey to the new position. Trustee Jeremy Duncan, who had earlier made a failed motion to postpone the hiring until next month, was the lone dissenting vote. Lackey will finish out the current school year at the high school and will officially begin his new role on July 1, according to the district. HUB ON HALSELL GETS FUNDING BOOST — The Bridgeport City Council Monday unanimously approved an ordinance authorizing $4 million in certificates of obligation (COs) for needed improvements at the Hub on Halsell, the future downtown park/green space the city has been working on for several years, and other city parks. The ordinance authorizing the COs is the final step in receiving the funding, which city staff and council began working on late last year. “This has been about 10 or 11 years we’ve been planning to get [the Hub on Halsell] done, and we’re getting real close now,” Bridgeport Mayor Randy Singleton said.
PARADISE AREA ROAD PROJECT — The county has begun preliminary work on a safety improvement project on Sunflower Road (County Road 3440) focused on the intersection with CR 3351. The full project is scheduled for the week of June 2, weather permitting. The project includes cutting down the hill and raising the intersection at CR 3351 to improve sight distance for drivers. Trees and brush will also be removed in the area to ensure an unobstructed view at the intersection.
SCHNEIDER STEPS DOWN AS LADY EAGLE SOCCER COACH — After leading the Decatur Lady Eagles to three consecutive district titles and 31 wins in 36 district games over the past four seasons, coach Ryan Schneider is stepping back from the program. Schneider — who has coached both the Eagles and Lady Eagles for the past two years — has relinquished his role as the girls head coach, and will remain as the leader of the boys program. He’s led the Lady Eagles to a 59-23-5 overall record (70.6 win percentage), while the team has qualified for the playoffs in all four campaigns. Read more online here.
