DECATUR CALLS $137 MILLION SCHOOL BOND — The Decatur School Board Monday unanimously approved calling a $137 million bond election on May 2. The largest piece of the bond is $100 million for the construction of a new middle school to replace McCarroll Middle School. The overall bond package will be broken into two parts. Proposition A for $132.7 million will be for a new middle school and will also include money to address facility needs district wide, career and technical education (CTE), transportation, technology infrastructure and safety and security. COUNTY UNDER 90-DAY BURN BAN — Outdoor burning is prohibited in Wise County for the next 90 days after a new burn ban was approved Monday. The decision by Wise County Commissioners to approve the new burn ban, which replaces the weather-based ban, falls after area fire departments had their hands full with more than a dozen grass fires in the area. Wise County Fire Marshal Jeff Doughty recommended the measure to commissioners Monday. He said fire conditions from dry and dead vegetation were exacerbated by the recent freeze. BRIDGEPORT ISD APPROVES TURF REPLACEMENT — Bull Memorial Stadium will be getting an overdue face lift this spring, as the Bridgeport ISD Board of Trustees Monday approved the purchase of replacing the stadium’s turf in the amount of $785,000. Bull Memorial Stadium’s current turf was installed in 2013, and according to district officials, was reaching the end of its lifespan and presenting safety concerns. The new turf will be installed at the conclusion of the high school soccer season, with a projected completion date of June 1. Bridgeport Middle School’s soccer teams will play exclusively road games while the project is underway, Bridgeport administrators said. The updates to the field also include a shock absorbing base pad, cooling and a 15-year warranty.
BOYD ISD TRUSTEES DECIDE AGAINST MAY BOND — After months of discussion regarding ongoing student overcrowding issues at its elementary campus, Boyd ISD trustees chose not to pursue a bond package in the upcoming May general election Monday. The move comes after discussing alternatives in the board’s previous two meetings, which included the pros and cons of purchasing or renting portable educational facilities. Trustees also approved financing a purchase of more than $2.5 million for a new 17-bus fleet due to ongoing issues with transportation provider Gold Star and adopted its 2026-27 school calendar. DRAGER EARNS PRIZE AT FWSSR — Maesa Drager, a Wise County 4-H member from Bridgeport, earned Reserve Champion Polled Hereford Steer in the Junior Steer Show at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Feb. 5 and 6.
MOBILE FOOD PANTRY — Bridgeport Mobile Food Pantry is 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Bridgeport First Methodist Church.
