MAN GIVEN 40 YEARS FOR MURDER OF STEPSON — Joshua Earwood was sentenced to 40 years in prison Wednesday for the 2023 murder of his stepson. Earwood, 39, pleaded guilty to murder last week in the shooting death of 18-year-old Caleb White in their home near Briar Sept. 12, 2023. 271st District Judge Brock Smith delivered the sentence after a half-day hearing where prosecutors and Earwood’s attorney put on evidence and called witnesses. White’s mother, Ashley Earwood, testified about witnessing Joshua Earwood point a gun at her son in the dining room of their home and shoot him one time in the chest. Read more online here.

STORM CHANCES — Today’s forecast calls for a high near 92 with a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, increasing to 30 percent overnight.

HEALTH AND SAFETY EXPO — The Wise Seniors Health and Safety Expo is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Decatur Conference Center. KIRK VIGIL — A memorial candlelight vigil for Charlie Kirk is 7 p.m. Sunday at the Wise County Court Center, 306 W. Main St. in Decatur. The event is being organized by Kope Hillary.

BREAKING NEW GROUND — A ground breaking ceremony for The Hub on Halsell is 4:30 p.m. Monday at 1102 Halsell St. in Bridgeport.

VOLLEYBALL — Chico (9-15) travels to face Perrin-Whitt in non-district action today at 4:30 p.m. VCA (18-6-2, 6-0) seeks its seventh TAPPS 2A win in a home battle against Bethesda Christian at 7 p.m.

CROSS COUNTRY — Northwest will run at the Braswell Invitational today at North Lakes Park in Denton.

MEDICARE CLASS — Decatur Public Library will host a Medicare class with Brian Ege 5:30 p.m. today. Ege will provide guidance and answer questions about Medicare coverage and options.

HORTICULTURE CLUB — The Wise County Horticulture Club will meet 6 tonight at the Wise County Fairgrounds. Guest speaker is Diana Hatch, a Texas Master Naturalist from the Elm Fork Chapter, specializing in entomology. She will give a talk on “Good Bugs in the Garden,” highlighting beneficial insects and their important roles in healthy garden ecosystems.
