Wise County Messenger

Update for Thursday, August 7, 2025

HEAT ADVISORY ISSUED — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Wise County from 1 p.m. today until 7 p.m. Friday. High temperatures today and tomorrow should be around 100 degrees with heat index values as high as 104. Hot temperatures and high humidity will increase the risk for heat-related illnesses to occur, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. The NWS suggests drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors. Extra precautions should also be taken when working outside, such as limiting strenuous activities to early morning or evening if possible and watching for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

NORTHWEST CONSIDERS SECOND TAX RATE ELECTION — The Northwest School Board will consider placing a Voter-Approval Tax Rate Election (VATRE) on the November ballot to alleviate pressure from what the district has described as the school funding crisis in Texas. The board on Monday did not take action on putting a VATRE before voters in the general election but did consider the possibility during a budget workshop at its meeting. The board must call for the item to be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot by Aug. 18. If approved, a VATRE would increase the district’s maintenance and operations (M&O) tax rate by three cents. The district called for a VATRE in last November’s election, but it was voted down 65.6 to 34.4 percent. It was intended to eliminate the district’s $16 million deficit after the adoption of the 2024-2025 budget, but with the measure’s failure, Northwest ISD was forced to cut around 100 staff positions and restructure multiple student programs.
