DECATUR, BOYD WIN VOLLEYBALL STATE TITLES — Decatur (42-7) earned its second straight 4A Division I state championship — the program’s seventh title overall — by defeating La Vernia 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24) Friday at Garland’s Curtis Culwell Center. Sophomore outside hitter Ava Green (18 kills, 2 block assists, 2 digs) was named the 4AI state MVP, and was joined on the all-state tournament team by senior setter Grace Fortune (40 assists, 11 digs, 2 aces) and sophomore middle blocker Sayler Peck (9 kills, 6 block assists, 3 digs, 1 block). Boyd (36-9) claimed its first state championship in program history by sweeping Clifton (25-23, 25-21, 25-10) in the 3AII state final, ending coach Clark Oberle’s career with 798 wins and his third state title. Senior outside hitter Addy Delgado (15 kills, 10 digs, 1 ace, 1 assist) closed her career as the 3AII state MVP. Three other Lady Jackets were tapped as all-state tournament players — senior libero Bryleigh Wallace (27 digs, 4 assists, 3 aces, 1 kill), junior setter Cami McIntire (29 assists, 5 kills, 4 digs, 3 block assists) and senior middle blocker Annabelle Nichter (7 kills, 4 block assists, 2 digs). FORMER RHOME OFFICER GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE — A former Rhome police officer was found guilty by a Wise County jury Friday of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 and given life without parole by the court. Robert Doyle Gillock, 37, of Poolville was found guilty of the first degree felony offense after about an hour of deliberation by the jury. Following a brief punishment phase of the trial, Gillock was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole by 271st District Judge Brock Smith. The offense carried a minimum sentence of 25 years in prison. Public records show Gillock worked as an officer at Rhome Police Department from September of 2013 to October of 2014. PLAYOFF FOOTBALL RESULTS — Decatur (8-3) claimed its third 4AI area title in four years under coach Steve Huff with a 49-21 win over Paris Saturday at Denison High School’s Munson Stadium. The Eagles will face defending 4AI state champion Celina in a regional semifinal battle 2 p.m. Friday at HEB’s Pennington Field. Alvord (9-3) saw its first season under coach Matt Fanning end with a 41-23 loss to Carlisle in a 2AI second-round matchup Friday at Ennis High School’s Lion Memorial Stadium.
RAINFALL REPORT — Overnight rainfall totals included 1.38 inches in Alvord, 1.13 in Decatur and 1.1 in Bridgeport. Wise County remains under a flood watch until 3 p.m. today. The National Weather Service said reports of mostly quarter size hail with some golf ball sized hail were received from the Rhome area early this morning.
BOYS BASKETBALL RESULTS — Slidell (6-1) claimed the championship title at the Florence Thanksgiving Tournament with a 5-0 run last week, defeating Vanguard Prep (71-61), Marble Falls (46-18), Lucas Christian (55-35), Ferris (66-42) and Vanguard Prep (61-49). Decatur (0-2) suffered a 91-36 loss to Stephenville Saturday. Bridgeport (1-1) fell to Holliday 56-53 in double overtime in its home-opener Friday. Boyd (1-1) dropped its loss to Sanger Saturday, 75-52. Chico (2-3) split its two matchups against Fortestburg (69-42) Friday and Perrin-Whitt (72-66) Saturday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL RESULTS — Decatur (9-2) brought home the title from the Coppell tournament last week with a 5-0 record. The Lady Eagles defeated John Paul II (64-42), WT White (80-26), Prosper Rock Hill (61-46), Plano East (63-53/2OT) and Frisco Lone Star (59-39). Bralyn Peck was named as the tournament MVP, while Style Brazile and Laken Coffman were first and second team all-tournament selections, respectively. Bridgeport 6-2) went 4-1 at the Ponder tournament, netting wins against Whitesboro (50-23), Celina (59-20), S&S (71-21) and Collinsville (59-45). The Sissies suffered a 42-38 loss to Clarendon in their final matchup. Paradise (5-0) remains undefeated following a 76-11 win over Newcastle Saturday. Alvord (0-4) suffered its fourth straight loss in an out-of-state battle against Ryan (Okla.) Saturday, 63-19. Chico (4-1) captured its fourth win by outlasting Callisburg 40-35 in overtime Saturday. Slidell (3-1) grabbed a 62-41 victory over Nocona Friday. VCA (0-2) was tripped up by Perrin-Whitt Friday, 26-22.
MAN HURT IN DIRT BIKE WRECK — A man suffered serious injuries after a dirt bike wreck near Boyd Sunday morning. Wise County EMS Administrator Randall Preuninger, the incident took place at around 11 a.m. in the 700 block of County Road 4757. The man was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth via AirEvac 68. His identity was not released.
HOLIDAY CLOSING — Wise County Dumpsites and the Environmental Services will close Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Dumpsites will reopen regular hours on Saturday.
