WEEKEND STORMS PACK PUNCH — Wise County was hit with two rounds of strong thunderstorms over the weekend, bringing high winds, hail and lots of lightning. West Wise County appeared to receive the brunt of the Saturday storm which moved in to the county around 5 p.m. Numerous trees and power lines were reported down in the Paradise and Bridgeport areas. Bridgeport Country Club reported 20 large trees blown down. Hail reports included up to baseball-sized south of Runaway Bay, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Power outages were also reported across the county. At the height of the storm, 5,200 Oncor customer were without power mainly in the areas of Bridgeport, Lake Bridgeport and Slidell, according to Oncor Area Manager Sabrina Easley. A large banner blew into the power lines and became entangled at the Wise County Fairgrounds in Decatur during the Eighter Food Truck Challenge. Crews were dispatched to remove the banner so the concert could continue. A possible lightning strike might be to blame for a fire at the old Southern Comfort restaurant in Alvord around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The building sustained damage, but was not a total loss, according to officials. Alvord and Sunset fire departments responded along with Rescue 1. Sunday’s storm was marked by an impressive lightning show. Several structure fire were reported during Sunday’s storms, possibly from more lightning strikes. Sunday’s storm also brought hail up to 1.25 inches in Decatur, according to the NWS. Oncor reported an estimated 2,600 customers out, mostly in the Decatur and Slidell areas Sunday. As of Monday morning, both Oncor and Wise Electric Co-op reported scattered outages across the county. Weekend rainfall totals included 1.77 inches in Bridgeport and 0.87 in Alvord. SATURDAY WRECK CRITICALLY INJURES 2 — A three-car wreck Saturday injured three people, including two who sustained critical injuries. The wreck happened just after 2 p.m. on Texas 114 west of Farm Road 718 between Boyd and Aurora. Three cars were involved in the collision, including one that rolled and another that caught fire, according to Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger. One of the critically injured patients was taken by ground ambulance to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth. PHI helicopter was also called to the scene and flew another patient to Medical City Denton. A third patient was taken to Medical City Decatur in stable condition, Preuninger said.
8 HURT IN BRIDGEPORT CRASH — A two-vehicle wreck south of Bridgeport Friday afternoon injured eight people, including one critically. The crash happened around 3 p.m. on Farm Road 2123 at the intersection of County Road 3432. Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said the “T-bone” collision happened between two sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Initial emergency radio reports indicated a patient in one vehicle received major injuries while patients in the other vehicle received more moderate injuries. Children were also reportedly in at least one of the vehicles. Lifeteam 68 flew one patient in critical condition to Medical City Denton, Preuninger said. Seven other patients were transported by ground ambulances to Medical City Decatur.
RUNAWAY BAY HOUSE FIRE — Multiple fire departments worked a house fire at 612 Lanai Circle in Runaway Bay around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The first arriving crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the home and initiated a rapid fire attack, Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said. “The residence was unoccupied at the time of the fire,” he said. “Unfortunately, two family dogs were unable to escape and perished in the incident. The two adult occupants have been displaced due to the extent of the damage. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Wise County Fire Marshal’s Office.”
RHOME WRECK INJURES 3 — A two-vehicle crash happened on U.S. 81/287 near Farm Road 3433 around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Three people were injured, including one that was in critical condition, one in serious condition and one in stable condition, according to Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger. All three were taken by ground ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
MORE STORMS POSSIBLE — Wise County could see another round of storms this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service, and some storms could be severe. Chance of rain is 40 percent.
PLAYOFF BASEBALL RESULTS — Boyd (31-5) earned its third consecutive trip to the regional finals after sweeping New Diana following a 13-0 Game 2 regional semifinal win Friday at McKinney’s Al Alford Field. The Yellowjackets will face New Diana in the a best-of-three 3A Division II fourth-round series later this week. Paradise (15-10-2) saw its season come to an end after a 4-3 Game 2 3AII regional semifinal loss to New Diana Saturday at Crandall High School. After dropping Game 1 of a 2A Division II regional semifinal series to Reisel, Alvord (21-7) rallied back to win the series with a pair of wins Friday at Godley High School, 9-1 and 10-1. The Bulldogs take on Tom Bean in the fourth round later this week.

PARADISE TRUSTEES TO NAME ACTING SUPERINTENDENT — On tonight’s agenda for the Paradise ISD Board of Trustees includes considering and taking appropriate action to name an acting superintendent for the school district. The agenda item follows the approval of resignation of current superintendent Will Brewer. Brewer was named the lone finalist for the same job at Jim Ned CISD last month. Meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the administration building, 338 School House Road in Paradise.
HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING — The Paradise Historical Society meets 7 p.m. Tuesday at Paradise Methodist Church fellowship building. Carolyn Markett, a member of the musical group The Heart Strings, will speak on “The History of the Mountain Dulcimer.” Refreshments will be served after the presentation. A business meeting will also be held with topics related to planning for the 19th annual Paradise Main Street Festival Sept. 27.
