LADY EAGLES CLAIM FIRST STATE TITLE — The Decatur Lady Eagles basketball team capped off a 36-2 campaign by knocking off two-time defending state champion Waco La Vega 53-41 Friday in the 4A Division I state championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio, earning the program’s first-ever state title. PARADISE FALLS IN 3AII STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME — In their first state final appearance, the Paradise Lady Panthers (27-11) suffered a 69-40 loss to Kountze in the 3A Division II state championship game Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Paradise earned a pair of all-state tournament selections — Gazey Yates (13 points, seven rebounds, three steals, one assists, one block) and Kimber Euler (nine points, 10 rebounds, one assist). READ’S STEER NAMED GRAND CHAMPION — Lynnleigh Read of Decatur 4-H took home the top prize at the Wise County Youth Fair market steer competition Friday. Against competition that was noted by the judge as particularly elite, the 13-year-old Chico resident and her steer, Glacier, were awarded the grand champion crown. “It’s such an honor,” said Read, who was overcome with emotions following the market steer show. “I’m very proud.” Her prized heavyweight cross steer also took the champion European crown. The steer sold for a record $14,000 at Saturday’s Youth Fair auction. Full results from Youth Fair will be included in a Messenger special section next week.
BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYOFF RESULTS — Decatur (29-9) closed its season following an 83-71 loss to Lubbock Estacado in the 4A Division I Region I final Friday at Abilene Wylie High School. Paradise (29-6) pulled off a 37-31 upset against Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill Friday at Kaufman High School to win the 3AII Region II title. 1 SERIOUSLY HURT IN BRIAR WRECK — One person was seriously injured in a two-vehicle wreck at the intersection of Farm Road 730 and Brighton Oaks Drive, close to the Tarrant County line near Briar, Saturday afternoon. The driver, who appeared to have rear ended the second vehicle, had to be extricated from the wreckage. Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said the patient was airlifted with serious injuries to Texas Health Harris Hospital in Fort Worth. AirEvac Lifeteam 68 transported the man. The other driver involved was not injured, Preuninger said.
NONE INJURED IN HELICOPTER CRASH — A small helicopter crashed near Alvord Friday afternoon, but no one was hurt, officials said. The crash was reported around 4:20 p.m. in the 400 block of County Road 1596, just west of U.S. 81/287, north of Alvord’s city limits. Texas DPS confirmed that no injuries were reported. According to Flight Aware, a SCHWEIZER 269 helicopter departed near the area at 4:18 p.m., which is around the time that the crash was reported. That aircraft, according to FAA data, is registered to a Travis Cannon of Corinth. Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said it appears that the small aircraft lost power, prompting autorotation and a difficult landing. The helicopter then rolled over with its propellers crashing into the dirt and grass of a mostly empty field, he said.
SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE TONIGHT — A strong storm system is expected to bring thunderstorms to the area late tonight into Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Damaging straight-line winds and brief spin-up tornadoes will be the primary hazards. Isolated instances of large hail will also be possible. Overnight rain chances are 100 percent, according to the NWS. Weekend rainfall totals included 0.8 of an inch in Alvord, 0.25 in Greenwood, 0.14 in Decatur and 0.11 in Bridgeport.
