ACREE FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER — A Wise County jury Friday found 20-year-old Austin Acree of Decatur guilty of murder in the 2023 death of 19-year-old Matthew Brown. Brown had gone missing from his Decatur home March 5, 2023, and his body was found two weeks later in Deep Creek near Aurora. Sentencing for Acree, who could face up to life in prison for the first degree felony offense, is set for June 11 in 271st District Court in Decatur. During three days of testimony, prosecutors laid out their case against Acree, saying he helped plan the death of Brown and took him to Deep Creek where Brown was shot twice in the head and buried in a shallow grave. SLIDELL ISD NAMES HESKETT LONE FINALIST — The Slidell ISD Board of Trustees named Chris Heskett as the lone finalist for the district’s superintendent position at a special meeting on Thursday. After the state-mandated 21-day waiting period, Heskett’s three-year contract is expected to begin on July 1. According to a press release from the district, Heskett will begin spending time in the district starting this month. Heskett spent the last eight years as superintendent of Covington ISD, a 1A school district north of Hillsboro. With 31 years in education, Heskett has held administration roles at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Read more online here.
BOYD FALLS IN STATE SEMIFINALS — The Boyd Yellowjackets (34-7) were knocked out of the 3A Division II baseball state semifinals after a 6-2 Game 3 loss to Wall Saturday at Tarleton State University’s Baseball Complex. Boyd forced the tiebreaker game following a 9-3 win Friday at TSU.
ELDER TAGGED WITH LOSS IN BRAVES’ RETURN — After being recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett Saturday, Decatur native Bryce Elder suffered the defeat in the Atlanta Braves’ 3-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox Sunday. Elder (2-3, 4.56 earned run average) allowed three runs on six hits, and tallied four strikeouts and three walks. As of Monday morning, Elder remained on the Braves’ active roster.
CEMETERY ASSOCIATION MEETING — The annual meeting of the Pleasant Grove No. 1 Cemetery Association is 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the cemetery gazebo. A covered dish luncheon will follow the business meeting.
PARADISE ROAD CLOSURE — Beginning today, Sunflower Road will be closed from Valley Court to Wisteria Lane for a safety improvement project. Closure times will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today through Friday. Flaggers will be stationed on both sides to assist residents who need access to homes beyond the barricades.
