Wise County Messenger

Update for Monday, April 21, 2025

WISE WEATHERS THE STORM — Severe storms passed through our area Saturday, but it appears Wise County was spared the worst of the storm’s fury. Wise County was placed under multiple tornado warnings from Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening, but no tornadoes have been confirmed to have touched down in the county. That wasn’t the case in Parker, Jack and Montague County where supercell thunderstorms produced multiple tornadoes. According to the National Weather Service, half-dollar size hail was reported in Bridgeport, and pea- to quarter-size hail was reported in Alvord. Rainfall totals from around the county included 2.68 inches in Alvord, 2.52 in Bridgeport and 1.7 in Decatur. Precinct 4 Commissioner Colby Shawn reported Sunday that County Road 1590 was closed at the Sandy Creek crossing due to high water. Several trees or limbs were also reported down across the county, but no other serious damage has been reported. We should see sunny skies today with a high around 78 degrees before rain and storm chances return Tuesday night.

WATCH FOR APPRAISAL NOTICES — The Wise County Appraisal District will begin mailing appraisal notices for real property — land and any improvements like homes or buildings — on Tuesday. The deadline to protest your appraised value is May 22, 30 days from the mailing date. According to the Texas Comptroller’s Office, that window is based on the postmark date — not when you actually receive the notice.

Salazar finished second in shot put with a throw of 37-06. She will compete at the 2A state track meet May 2 at the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium.

LUTKENHAUS GRABS TWO MEDALS, EARNS STATE BERTHS — Northwest sophomore Cooper Lutkenhaus continued to add to his running resume last weekend by securing a pair of medals at the 6A Region I championships at the University of Texas at Arlington’s Maverick Stadium. Lutkenhaus grabbed gold and set a new regional record in the 800 (1:50.20), and garnered silver in the 400 (47.69). Also joining Lutkenhaus on the trip to state is Nicholas Curley, who clocked 37.29 for a second-place finish in 300 hurdles. The duo’s finishes helped the Texans tie for third in the team standings with Mansfield Lake Ridge, scoring 38 points. In the girls division, Northwest’s Levariya Pinder will have a shot at redemption after earning her second straight state bid in long jump, finishing second with a leap of 18-10.50. Eliora-Lynn Ndri also qualified for her first state meet, clocking 43.09 for second in 300 hurdles. The 6A state track meet is scheduled for May 3 at the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A.
