SALES TAX HOLIDAY WEEKEND — Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock is reminding shoppers they can save money on clothes and school supplies during the state’s sales tax holiday on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. State law exempts sales tax on qualified items — such as clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks — priced below $100, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. HEAT ADVISORY CONTINUES — Today could be the warmest day of summer yet. The forecast calls for a high of 102 with heat index values as high as 108. Wise County remains under a heat advisory until 7 tonight. Saturday’s expected high temperature is 101 with heat index values as high as 106. Sunday should bring slight relief with a high around 97.

DCTF PICKS WISE’S PLAYOFF CONTENDERS — A total of four Wise County football teams are eyed as playoff teams in the 2025 season, according to the latest edition of the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine. Paradise, Decatur, VCA and Alvord are the publication’s favorites to earn postseason berths. DCTF picks Paradise and Decatur to claim titles in District 4-3AI and 5-4AI, respectively, while VCA is expected to finish second in TAPPS 6-Man Division II. Alvord is eyed as a third-place finisher in 6-2A. Northwest, Bridgeport, Chico and Boyd are predicted to miss the playoffs. Northwest is ranked fifth in 4-6A, while Bridgeport and Chico are sixth in 3-4AII and 8-2AII, respectively. Boyd is picked to place seventh in 4-3AI. Read more online here.

VOLLEYBALL SCRIMMAGES — Today is the first day of volleyball scrimmages for the 2025 season. Decatur will face Granbury and Peaster 9 a.m. at Granbury High School. Bridgeport hosts Bowie, Fort Worth Carter-Riverside and Chico at 2 p.m. Boyd welcomes Alvarado, Holliday and Lindsay at 9 a.m. Paradise travels to Sanger to take on Sanger and Pottsboro at 6 p.m. Alvord will host VCA and Bryson at 4:30 p.m. Northwest battles Denton Guyer and Lebanon Trail at home at 9 a.m. On Saturday, Decatur takes on Paradise, Northwest and Argyle Liberty Christian at 9 a.m. Bridgeport faces Poolville and Tolar 10 a.m. at Poolville High School. Boyd travels to take on Krum at 9 a.m. Chico returns home to warm up against Perrin-Whitt and Prairie Valley at 9 a.m.

CROSS COUNTRY — Boyd and Slidell will open the 2025 season at the Yellowjacket Relays at Boyd High School.

ALVORD MEET THE TEACHER — Alvord Elementary School will hold meet the teacher night 4 to 6 p.m. Monday while Alvord Intermediate will hold meet the teacher 6 to 7 p.m. Monday with parent meeting at 6.

BACK TO SCHOOL BASH — Slidell ISD will hold its Back to School Bash 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday. It will feature meet the teacher night at the elementary level, schedule pick up at the secondary level, pizza in the elementary gym and Kona Ice available for purchase.

BOYD MEET THE TEACHER — Boyd will host meet the teacher night 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at the elementary school and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the intermediate school.

NORTHWEST MEET THE TEACHER — Northwest ISD elementary schools in Rhome and Newark will hold meet the teacher night 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday.
