Update for Friday, August 1, 2025

DECATUR SET TO OPEN NEW POLICE STATION — For the first time in its history, the Decatur Police Department has a home built for them. On Saturday, exactly 86 years after the city council first voted to form the department, DPD and community members will gather at 9 a.m. to celebrate the grand opening of the new Decatur Police headquarters — a 30,500-square-foot, $27 million facility located at 1601 S. Charles St. The new station replaces a series of hand-me-downs, spanning a few offices in the old city hall, a tiny building near Trinity Street and most recently, a repurposed Decatur Baptist Junior College dormitory wing. The opening of the new station is featured in a special section in this week’s Wise County Messenger. Pick up a copy on newsstands or read it online here.

WEEKEND STORM CHANCES — After a run of 100-degree days this week, it should be a bit cooler this weekend with rain chances each day. Saturday’s forecast includes a high around 90 degrees with a 20 percent chance of storms. Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 93 with a 30 percent chance of storms Sunday night. Some parts of Wise County received rain on Thursday and overnight. Rainfall totals included 0.33 of an inch in Bridgeport.

WHITE TAPPED AS EAGLES’ SKIPPER — Former Archer City baseball coach Collin White is returning to Wise County after being named the head coach of the Decatur Eagles last week. White spent two seasons with the Wildcats, leading Archer City to a 16-21 overall record, including 8-11 in district play, with one playoff berth. Last season, Archer City (13-11) placed third in District 9-2A behind Windthorst and Petrolia. The Wildcats were knocked out by Nocona in a 2A Division I bi-district series, 6-2 and 14-2. White was a standout utility player at Bridgeport, and later coached in the Bulls’ program for seven years, including three as head coach (2020-22). With Bridgeport, White tallied a 25-46 overall record in three seasons as head coach, and led the Bulls to the 2021 4A playoffs. Read more online here.
