BULLS BRING HOME STATE SOCCER TITLE — Tied at 2 at the end of regulation, Bridgeport (22-3) netted three goals in overtime to claim a 5-2 win over Brookshire Royal in the 4A Division II state championship match Thursday. Junior forward/striker Jared Contreras scorched the nets two times in the overtime periods, senior midfielder/striker Xxavier Garza added one of his own goals and Bridgeport goalkeeper Habram Medina kept the Falcons away from the net. The result was a wave of dominance in the extra 20 minutes — one that led to the program’s first state championship at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. Contreras earned MVP honors following a hat trick performance, while Garza netted a pair of goals. Read more online here.
HORNER TRIAL DAY 3: A PROPOSED DEAL, AN ALTER EGO AND CLOTHING DISCOVERY — On Thursday, Tarrant County jurors heard evidence that Tanner Horner sought a deal for a house arrest situation where he could celebrate Christmas with his family just a week after Athena Strand’s death. That came from video of an interview with Texas Ranger Job Espinoza. That video also showed more discussion about “Zero,” which Horner claimed is a split personality/alter ego. Horner claimed it was Zero who strangled the 7-year-old child. An FBI special agent also testified about finding what appeared to be children’s clothing behind the shed on the Horner family property where he was living. Those items, shown in crime scene photos, appear to be a child’s green sock, white pair of underwear and a pair of jeans. Those items fit the description of what Athena was wearing the day she went missing, according to prosecutors. Horner’s capital murder trial continues today in Fort Worth as prosecutors seek the death penalty. Follow full coverage of the trial at wcmess.com/athena.
