Chico senior Carley Salazar accomplished her goal of competing with the top throwers at the 2A state championships in her final season.
Representing the Lady Dragons in her career-ending competition, Salazar’s fourth throw measured 35-01.50 to secure a ninth-place finish Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
“I’m just blessed to have this experience,” Salazar said. “However, at the end of the day, I didn’t feel liek I did the best that I could have. I definitely did not compete good at all, in my opinion. I feel like I could have been out there and done a lot more. The competition was just overbearing and overwhelming for me to go out there and compete with today.”
San Augustine junior Ziunna Wade’s first toss proved to be the winning mark at 43-03.75. Refugio senior Ciara Tilley (41-09) and Panhandle junior Nelly Thiessen (41-04) garnered silver and bronze, respectively.
“Carley’s worked hard all year long, and she did what we wanted to do,” Chico coach Susie Burt said. “It’s hard at this state because your nerves get the better of you, and this was her first time that she’s been here. She’s represented Chico to the best of her ability. We came against some good competition here at state, which is something we haven’t seen all year. But I’m still happy for her and everything she’s accomplished.”
Salazar hopes to turn her top 10 state finish into a collegiate offer to continue her throwing career.
“It would be a huge blessing to have an opportunity like that,” she said. “It would help me with what’s after graduation and my future plans.”
