A familiar face will soon be taking the helm of Decatur’s economic development efforts.

The Decatur Economic Development Corporation (DEDC) has named Matt Runnels as its next executive director. The promotion was officially approved by the Decatur City Council Monday night.

Runnels has served as the DEDC’s business development director since March 2024. His industry background spans aerospace and heavy manufacturing, oil and gas, healthcare and economic development work specific to Decatur. Additionally, Runnels has lived in Wise County for more than 17 years.

Runnels will take over the role following the departure of current Executive Director Kevin Holzbog, whose final day is set for March 27.

According to a March 23 DEDC press release, the board conducted what it described as a rigorous evaluation and interview process, considering candidates from a variety of professional backgrounds before determining Runnels was the best fit.

The release also highlighted his relationships with local stakeholders and connections across Texas.

“Matt brings a unique combination of industry knowledge, local insight, and established connections that will be invaluable as we build on the strong foundation established under previous leadership,” said board president Jason Wren in the release. “Matt is a true professional who stood out throughout our evaluation, and we are confident he will continue to lead our organization with professionalism and vision into the future.”
