Alvord 62, Nocona 6

Army commit Zane Fuentes morphed into the Alvord version of a Swiss Army knife on homecoming night, scoring three times on the ground, once through the air and again on 48-yard punt return in a 62-6 blowout over Nocona Friday.

The district opening win in front of a homecoming crowd pushed Alvord to 3-2 overall on the season. Nocona falls to 1-4 on the year.

Fuentes’s five touchdowns all came in the first half, powering the Bulldogs to a 48-0 lead at half. Kamper Barnes led the team in rushing yards, totaling 85 yards on 13 attempts. Cutter Hamilton, the final piece of Alvord’s three-headed monster, also scored on a six-yard rush.

Dalton George tossed three touchdowns, completing five of eight attempts. He had 85 yards on the short night, due to the lopsided nature of the contest. Tight end Zane Smith had 32 yards receiving and a touchdown. Brayden Clark also hauled in a 15-yard touchdown reception from George.

Alvord  (3-2, 0-1) plays Trenton on the road in Week 6. Trenton (2-3, 0-1) fell to Tioga 72-0 Friday night.

Ponder 32, Boyd 29

Ponder kicker Joshua Hickman broke green and gold hearts with a go-ahead 47-yard field goal to stave off Boyd’s valiant upset bid Friday night, giving the Lions a 32-29 win.

Ponder (4-0) were 38-point favorites entering the contest after winning by the following scores in their first three weeks: 77-0, 82-7 and 79-7. But the Yellowjackets gave them a battle, and it took an uncommon kick in the 3A ranks to put them away.

Boyd raced out to a 21-13 lead into half, but Ponder scored 16 unanswered points in the third to pull back ahead. From there, it was a rock fight. Aiden Young tied the game at 29 after a 1-yard touchdown rush, and then a pass from quarterback Cash Selby for a successful 2-point conversion.

The game-winning kick sailed through the uprights with under a minute left.

Boyd (3-2, 0-1) will have next week off before traveling to Vernon in its next game.

Olney 37, Chico 30

Chico led Olney 30-16 entering the fourth quarter on homecoming night Friday at Dragon Field, but a series of unfortunate events left the Dragons on the wrong side of a wild comeback.

The Cubs pulled within one touchdown with around 11 minutes to play after a 22-yard rush from Kanton Rodgers. With 3 minutes left, the Olney defense forced a fumble and returned it for a touchdown to tie the game at 30.

Then, with around 1 minute left to play, it happened again.

A second fumble return touchdown gave Olney a 37-30 win, as the Cubs defense played spoiler on homecoming night.

Chico (1-3) will have next week off. The Dragons will return to the field Oct. 10 to face Collinsville on the road.
