Wise County will see a few contested local races on the March primary ballot, with Monday’s filing deadline bringing some clarity to the field of candidates.
Bill Hogg, Francisca Ortiz, Jason Van Dyke and Ed Villa all filed in the Republican Primary for Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace. Hogg is a retired law enforcement officer; Ortiz is a Texas Department of Public Safety state trooper; Van Dyke is an attorney; and Villa is a deputy Wise County clerk. Current Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Jan Morrow has announced her retirement, effective Jan. 1, 2026.
Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace incumbent Kim Redman drew Cindy Buckner Barksdale as a challenger in the Republican Primary. Barksdale is a school counselor.
In the 271st District judge race, Paul Belew and Andrew Lloyd filed in the Republican Primary.
None of the above races drew a Democratic opponent, meaning the winner of the primary will be elected to the position, barring any independent challengers.
Other local races on the Republican Primary ballot which did not draw challengers included county judge (J.D. Clark), county court at law judge No. 1 (Greg Lowery), district clerk (Loucrecia Biggerstaff), county clerk (Blanca Tuma), county treasurer (Katherine Canova Hudson), Precinct 2 commissioner (Kevin Burns), Precinct 4 commissioner (Colby Shawn), Precinct 3 justice of the peace (Mandy Hopkins Hays) and Precinct 4 justice of the peace (Willie Garrett).
On the state level, House District 64 Rep. Andy Hopper drew a challenger in Lisa McEntire in the Republican Primary. In the Democratic Primary for House District 64, Julie Evans and Christie Wood filed for the seat.
In the U.S. House races, District 26 incumbent Rep. Brandon Gill drew Robert Chick as an opponent in the Republican Primary. District 13 incumbent Rep. Ronny Jackson will face off against Chasity Wedgeworth in the Republican Primary.
On the Democratic side, Ernest Lineberger and Steven Shook filed for District 26. Mark Nair did not draw an opponent for District 13 representative in the Democratic Primary.
