Panthers garner silver, earn 14 area berths

A big day on the track by Paradise’s Luke Brown helped the Panthers take home a second-place team finish from the District 10-3A championships last week. 

Competing at Whitesboro High School’s Bearcat Stadium April 9, Brown secured a trio of gold medals, as Paradise scored 126 points — finishing 22 behind league champion Pilot Point (148). The Panthers collected a haul of nine medals and 14 area berths. 

Brown ran away with individual wins in the 100 (11.16) and 200 (22.19). He also tacked on a gold medal in the 4×100 with Elijah Jennings, Chase Harmon and Layne Smith, earning the district title in 42.22. 

Jennings, Harmon and Smith added their second league championship by running 1:29.82 in the 4×200 along with Cody Bridgeman. 

Harmon and Jennings garnered silver medals in the 100 (11.45) and triple jump (40-01), respectively. Easton Skates clocked 16.22 to finish as a district runner-up in 110 hurdles. 

Camden Walker took bronze with a time of 41.62 in 300 hurdles, and qualified for area in the 4×400 (3:34.98) with Jamie Chavez, Teagan Lambert and Levi Clayton. Smith ran 11.45 to secure a third-place finish in the 100.

Jacob Jones punched his ticket to area with a pair of fourth-place runs in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, clocking 16.82 and 42.18, respectively. Jennings earned his fourth area berth after placing fourth in long jump (19-04.50), while McCray Smith cleared 8-00 in pole vault to finish fourth and advance to area. 

Boyd took sixth in the team standings with 47 — 19 more than seventh-place Callisburg (28).

Layton Wheeler and Lex Horton secured the Yellowjackets’ lone individual silver medals in the 200 (22.65) and long jump (20-01), respectively. Wheeler also finished as a league runner-up in the 4×100 (43.10) with Dalton Gray, Brylon Nobles and Grady Rawlings, and added a bronze medal in the 4×200 with Gray, Rawlings and Lukas Bures. 

Boyd’s final area bid was collected by Logan Reser, running 2:16.27 for fourth in the 800. 

The 9/10-3A championships will be held Thursday at Whitesboro’s Bearcat Stadium.
