MBB Roundup: Hounds defeat Collinsville, earn 10th league win

The Slidell Hounds continued to top the District 13-2A standings by adding a pair of league wins to their record this week. 

Ranked 16th in this week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 2A boys poll, Slidell (23-6) improved to 10-0 following a 51-46 win over Collinsville and a 58-34 victory against Lindsay. 

Slidell held a 1-point lead over Collinsville — 40-39 — at the end of the third quarter Wednesday. Junior guard Mayson Taylor secured the win for the Hounds by scoring eight of his team-high 15 points in the final frame to lead an 11-7 closing drive. 

Ryder Kolar and Carter Pierce also netted double-digit points, scoring 11 each. 

In the Hounds’ Tuesday win against Lindsay, senior center Austin Zuniga terrorized the Knights in the first half, putting down 14 of his team-best 16 points. Cash Noday helped with 15 points, while Taylor added 14. 

Slidell hosts a league showdown against Era Friday, and returns to the road for a clash against Tioga Tuesday. Both games are scheduled for 8 p.m. tip-offs.

 

Paradise 68, Callisburg 34

Fresh off of their 1-point rivalry win over Ponder Tuesday, the Paradise Panthers claimed their eighth 10-3A win by defeating Callisburg in a league make-up game Wednesday. 

Cooper Jones nailed six 3-points and finished with 23 points to lead the 3A No. 2 Panthers (27-2, 8-0) to a 68-34 win over the Wildcats at Callisburg High School.

Jones did the bulk of his damage in the first half, dropping 21 points. His final bucket was a field goal in the fourth quarter. 

Will McGregor finished with 10 points. Paradise’s trio of Cash Gibson, Hogan Henderson and Max Jordan tallied eight each.

Paradise ends its 3-game week with Pilot Point 7:30 p.m. Friday at home. 

 

Boyd 59, Whitesboro 42

A big scoring night from senior guard Lex Horton Tuesday put the Boyd Yellowjackets in the win column for the third time in 10-3A play this season. 

Horton provided the bulk of Boyd’s offense with 34 points in the team’s 59-42 home win over Whitesboro.

In the first half, Horton paced the Yellowjackets with 16 points on Boyd’s 26-18 run. Limited to just two points in the third quarter, he closed out the game with 16 in the final 8 minutes to help Boyd outscore Whitesboro, 23-16. 

Spencer Harrison helped with nine points, while Kade Spencer finished with eight. 

The Yellowjackets travel to face Valley View 7:30 p.m. Friday.

 

VCA 51, Bethesda Christian School 36

The Victory Christian Academy Patriots notched their 10 TAPPS 2A District 2 win in a key road win Tuesday. 

Led by 19 points from sophomore guard Jaylen Donald, VCA (22-6, 10-1) overwhelmed Bethesda Christian School in a 51-36 victory. 

Junior Isaac Rosser aided the Patriots’ offense with 13 points. Chris McBee finished with nine, while Cameron Keller totaled six. 

The Patriots tip-off against Sacred Heart 7 p.m. Thursday in Muenster, and will host Harvest Christian Academy 5 p.m. Saturday. 

 

Chico 62, Era 49

Chico senior guard Jordan Weiland continued his mission to prove why he’s one of the top scorers in the state Tuesday night. 

Weiland — who leads the state in scoring with 31.4 points per game, according to MaxPreps — amassed a game-high 37 points to lead the Dragons (17-12, 5-5) to a 62-49 home win over Era.

In the first half, Weiland knocked down four 3-pointers and tallied 16 points, but the Dragons trailed Era by 3 (29-26) at halftime. The veteran Dragon helped flipped the script in the second half, adding four more 3-pointers and scoring 21 points in the final 16 minutes on Chico’s 36-20 closing run.

Talon Smith also turned in a double-digit scoring night with 13 points. 

The Dragons take on Muenster in a pivotal 13-2A matchup 8 p.m. Friday at Muenster High School. 

 

Eagle Mountain 56, Decatur 32

The Decatur Eagles’ slow start led to the team’s seventh 10-3A loss Tuesday night against Eagle Mountain. 

Decatur (9-17) suffered a 56-32 home loss to the Knights, dropping the Eagles to 3-7 in league play. 

Rawston New scored nine points to lead the Eagles’ offense. Lance Shelton added eight, while Phoenyx Redwine and Chase Berg netted four each. 

The Eagles hit the road to battle Springtown 7:30 p.m. Friday. 

 

Burkburnett 99, Bridgeport 56

Despite a high-scoring night from Julius Johnson, the Bridgeport Bulls couldn’t pull off the upset against 4A No. 8 Burkburnett Tuesday. 

Johnson — who is second in the state in made free throws with 195 — went 8-for-10 from the line and led the Bulls with 27 points in a 99-56 home loss to the Bulldogs. 

Blake Morrow hit three 3-pointers and added 11 points. Owen Jones tacked on eight, while Kevin Cortez netted seven. 

The Bulls face Lake Worth 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lake Worth High School.

 

Muenster 57, Alvord 35

Muenster’s Jeremiah Franklin caught fire behind the 3-point arc in the second half, resulting in Alvord’s ninth straight 13-2A loss Tuesday night.

Franklin finished with 16 points to help the Hornets claim a 57-35 win over the Bulldogs at Alvord High School. 

The Bulldogs’ offense was led by 11 points from Brayden Clark. Paxton McDaniel added wight, while Jeremy Watson scored six. 

Alvord (10-17, 1-9) will try to snap its streak against Collinsville 8 p.m. Friday at Collinsville High School.
