Forest Service: Black Creek Lake recreation area, boat ramp temporarily closedFree Access

The Forest Service will temporarily close the Black Creek Lake Recreation Area and boat ramp on the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands in Wise County, beginning Wednesday, April 15, to allow for critical road and site improvements.

The closure will support reconditioning and chipseal work along Forest Service Road 902 (Black Creek Lake Road), along with general maintenance inside the recreation area. Planned work includes removing debris, cleaning and shaping ditches, placing aggregate base and applying a protective chipseal surface.

Work is expected to take about three weeks, weather permitting, with the following schedule:

• Week 1: Clearing vegetation, debris removal and ditch maintenance

• Week 2: Placement and grading of aggregate base

• Week 3: Chip seal application and a required minimum two-day curing period with no traffic

For public safety, the recreation area and boat ramp will be closed throughout construction due to heavy equipment operations, limited parking availability and road surface treatments.

Visitors are advised to seek alternate recreation sites during the closure. The Forest Service anticipates reopening the area prior to Memorial Day weekend, weather and project conditions permitting.

“The outdoor recreation economy is booming, and the Forest Service is committed to expanding visitor access and improving outdoor services,” said Kimpton Cooper, forest supervisor. “We appreciate your patience while we make these upgrades to improve longterm access and enhance the overall visitor experience at Black Creek Lake.”
