A home improvement project resulted in fire damage at a stucco residence Tuesday in the 1000 block of County Road 4481 near Boyd.
All residents were accounted for and unharmed, but efforts to contain the fire and minimize damage to the home proved challenging.
The fire started after residents attempted to braze metal as part of shower renovations, said Boyd Fire (Wise County ESD No. 1) chief Jason Paradise.
At some point during the process, Paradise said hay insulation within the walls ignited. The flames were trapped between the stucco exterior, which helped limit it from spreading but also made it difficult for crews to access the burning material.
Firefighters essentially created holes in the exterior of the home and brought water to those hot spots where flames had spread.
Paradise said crews would likely be at the scene for “a while” to ensure that the structure fire would not rekindle.
Responding agencies included Boyd Fire Department, Decatur Fire Department, Paradise Fire Department, Wise County EMS and the Wise County Fire Marshal.
