With the District 5-4A Division I title on the line in Week 10 for the second straight season, the Decatur Eagles could not match the fire power of 4AI No. 8 Springtown Friday night.
Decatur (5-3, 4-1) was unable to stop Springtown quarterback Kaine Hill, who accounted for 410 total yards of offense and eight touchdowns. Hill’s performance led the Porcupines to a 63-36 home victory, allowing Springtown (10-0, 6-0) to claim its second straight league championship title and the program’s first undefeated regular season since 1988.
“They’re good, and I give them credit — there’s no doubt about that,” Decatur coach Steve Huff said. “On a night like tonight, we needed to score a bunch of points to stay in it because their offense had our number. We didn’t make the plays when we needed to, and we had some situations that got us in a bind… But it’s not like our kids just laid over. It was a tough matchup, and it shows us that we’ve still got a lot of work to do. We’ll go back to the drawing board and focus on this one. We can’t worry about this one because it’s done, so we’ve got to go take care of our business.”

Hill started his big night early. After an 8-yard touchdown run by Decatur wide receiver Wyatt Dunn, the Springtown signal caller drew the score even at 7 with a 29-yard touchdown run. An 82-yard pass from Eagle quarterback Rhys Ragan to Dunn gave Decatur a 14-7 lead, but the advantage didn’t last long thanks to a pair of touchdown runs by Hill from 2 and 38 yards out to put Springtown ahead by 7 — 21-14 — at the end of the first quarter.
In the second frame, Hill tossed a 44-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Christian Mendoza, followed by a 18-yard scoring run by Springtown running back Jon Anthony Lardizabal. The Eagles trimmed the Porcupines’ lead to 5 at halftime —35-30 — thanks to a pair of Ragan touchdown throws to running back Jake Milligan (41) and Dunn (32), as well as an Anthony Weeks 24-yard field goal.
Springtown came out of the break firing on all cylinders, fueled by Hill’s dual threat ability. He added three more scoring runs in the second half, and tossed a 74-yard scoring bomb to Mendoza to put the game out of Decatur’s reach.

Decatur wide receiver Wyatt Dunn racked up 197 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches to lead the Eagles’ receivers in a 63-36 Week 10 District 5-4A Division I loss to Springtown Friday. Dunn also ran in a touchdown on an 8-yard reverse play, and tossed a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jett Jenkins. BRENDAN MARCHAND | WCMESSENGER
The Eagles’ only score of the second half was Ragan’s 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jett Jenkins.
Hill completed 17 of his 25 passing attempts for 285 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception — a deflected pass corralled by Decatur linebacker Shane Elosegui — and made six end zone visits on the ground behind 121 rushing yards on 11 carries.
“[Hill’s] very tough to stop,” Huff said. “They’ve got great kids that compliment him well in the passing game, and [Lardizabal] is a good back, as well. They’re good up front offensively, and that caused us some problems tonight. We just continually got outnumbered and couldn’t get it done.”
Decatur will close its 5-4AI schedule with a home battle against Fort Worth Southwest 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. The Raiders (4-5) improved to 3-2 in league paly after a 40-7 win over Fort Worth Western Hills Friday.
“We’ve just got to flush [the loss to Springtown],” Huff said. “We got our tails whipped tonight, but we’ll watch the video and get ready for next week. I think the kids will rebound fine. It’s our Senior Night next week, and we’ve got a bunch of seniors. It’ll be their night, so we’ve got to go get ready for it. The idea is to get a win and get a little momentum going as we head into the playoffs.”

Key takeaways
Ragan shines in first rivalry clash despite loss
Ragan proved to be calm and collected throughout his first Battle of Farm Road 51 rivalry matchup. He threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-26 passing with one pick — his first of the 2025 season. His top target was Dunn, who amassed 197 yards on eight receptions. The Decatur quarterback shared the love around the field, connecting with six different receivers throughout the game.
“Rhys has been in the fire all year and has done a really good job for a young quarterback,” Huff said. “Tonight was no different. Our receivers had a good night catching the ball and getting some stuff going. That being said, I don’t think we did enough at certain points of the game to make [Springtown] feel uncomfortable to where they’d have to do something different.”
Porcupines quill Eagles’ run game
Springtown’s defense was effective against Decatur’s rushing attack in Week 10. Commonly known for its run game led by running backs Milligan and Jamari Fletcher, the Eagles only gained 95 yards on the ground on 41 attempts, averaging 2.3 yards per carry.
Springtown offense tears through Decatur defense
The Porcupines put on quite a show on Senior Night. Springtown finished with 667 yards of total offense — 382 rushing and 285 passing. Decatur’s defense only denied the Porcupines’ offense on two possessions — a 55-yard punt and a turnover on downs late in the fourth quarter.
Eagles still hold edge in rivalry showdown
Despite the Week 10 loss, Decatur can still rest its hat on leading the series in its historic battle against Springtown. Friday’s game served as the 36th all-time meeting between the two teams, with the Eag les holding a 21-15 advantage. The Eagles are 2-2 in the rivalry under Huff, having won the first two meetings en route to back-to-back district titles and 4AI state semifinal appearances in 2022 and 2023.
