Dunavant’s big night lifts Bulls past Burkburnett, 21-9


A 5-RBI night by Dawson Dunavant (2-for-5) helped Bridgeport earn its sixth District 7-4A victory Tuesday.

The Bulls (11-15-1) bombarded Burkburnett with 13 hits, while also collecting 13 walks in a 21-9 win over the Bulldogs at Burkburnett High School.

Coming up empty in his first two plate appearances, Dunavant’s first base knock came with no outs in the top of the fifth inning. His bases-loaded single to center field drove in Hayden Butler from third, giving Bridgeport an 8-4 lead.

The Bulls added nine more runs in the fifth. Following Dunavant’s hit, Dylan Hunter swung for a 2-run single to score Blake Morrow and Cooper Byers, while Landon Johnson plated Dunavant and Hunter with a 2-run double.

Bridgeport also added a run scored by Johnson on a passed ball by Burkburnett pitcher Tannyn Polk, a RBI ground out by Adrian Myers to drive in Eudys Mejias Gil, a bases-loaded walk issued to Byers by Bulldog pitcher Mason Williams to score Corbin Knox and a 2-run ground out by Dunavant to plate Butler and Morrow. 

Dunavant added a 2-run double with two outs in the top of the sixth, driving home Myers and Morrow. In the next at-bat, Hunter reached on an error by Burkburnett second baseman Jeremiah Duncan, allowing Byers and Dunavant to score. 

Hunter, Johnson and Myers swung for two RBIs each. Johnson led Bridgeport’s lineup, finishing 3-for-5 with a pair of singles and a double. 

Myers collected the win, allowing four runs on four hits in a 4-inning start. He tallied four walks and one strikeout. Karsyn Timms and Matthew Eslinger combined for two innings of relief, giving up five runs on two hits with six walks and two strikeouts. 

The Bulls close their league schedule with a Game 2 home battle against Burkburnett 6:30 p.m. Friday.
