Decatur won’t switch to a four-day school week for another year, but the 2024/2025 calendar will still feature quite a few Friday holidays, especially for students.
Next school year’s calendar was approved by the school board at its March 25 meeting.
After the board decided in February to wait until the 2025/2026 school year to move to a four-day week, two options for the 2024/2025 calendar were released, and parents and staff had a chance to vote for their preferred calendar.
“Option B” was the choice of 62 percent of the 1,544 respondents.
The highlights of the calendar include:
- First day of school for students: Aug. 14
- Thanksgiving break: Nov. 25-29
- Student winter break: Dec. 23-Jan. 3
- Spring Break: March 17-21
- Last day of school: May 22
- Graduation: May 22
The calendar includes 19 staff development/student holidays, including one Friday in September, one Friday in October, three Fridays in November, three Fridays in January, one Friday in February and two Fridays in May prior to the end of school. The other staff development days are scheduled before students return in August and the day after students are released for summer break.
The calendar could still be subject to change. For instance, the district tries to align spring break with that of Weatherford College Wise County, which had not yet announced next year’s school calendar as of last week’s board meeting.
In other business, the board approved a couple of items related to the construction of a fully enclosed wheelchair lift for the press box at Eagle Stadium. The board approved going out for sealed bids for the project and a work order with the district’s architect, Corgan Associates, for a fee of $35,000.
The board also approved a work order with Corgan to provide architectural services for the district’s long range facilities planning at a cost of $50,000.
The board discussed but tabled action on approving an auditor to perform an efficiency audit for the district. The board is expected to revisit the item at a future meeting.
