Decatur defends home floor, wins regional championship


The Decatur Eagles won the team title at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Region 6 Division 2 championships March 13 at Decatur High School. Decatur scored 50 points to win the regional title, earning nine medals and 10 state berths. ASHLEY KYLE | FOR THE MESSENGER

Competing on their home floor for the last time this season, the Decatur Eagles grabbed nine medals and 10 state berths en route to adding the regional team title to their nest. 

Decatur scored 50 points to claim the top team finish at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Region 6 Division 2 championships March 13 at Decatur High School — outscoring runner-up Farmersville (21) by 29. Prosper Richland rounded out the top 3 with a bronze finish, scoring 20. 

The Eagles’ medal count included a pair of individual regional titles. Julian Ardiano won the 148 class with 1,275 pounds, while Israel Rueda lifted 1,720 pounds to take gold in the 242 class. Both Ardiano and Rueda earned state bids.

A total of five Decatur lifters punched their tickets to state after finishing as regional runners-up — Jarrett McMaster (114 class, 850 pounds), Lukas Britt (132 class, 1,250 pounds), Garrison Fay (198 class, 1,435 pounds), Drake Taylor (220 class, 1,465 pounds) and Joe Finley (275 class, 1,705 pounds). 

Trenton Dickey qualified for state after placing third in the 181 class with 1,375 pounds. Caden Merrett totaled 1,660 pounds to secure the bronze and a state berth in the 275 class. 

Decatur’s Alex Martinez rounded out the Eagles’ state qualifiers following a total lift of 1,360 pounds to finish fourth in the 165 class.

The Bridgeport Bulls scored 2 points to place 17th in the team standings. 

Bridgeport’s top lifter was Dominic Serafin, who scored all of the team’s points by placing fourth in the 275 class with 1,340 pounds. 

The THSPA Division 2 state championship is scheduled for March 27 at Abilene’s Taylor County Expo Center.
