Decatur, Boyd swim programs start season with wins


Decatur swimmer Preston Dollins took home five first-place finishes from the Decatur Tri-Meet, held Sept. 26 at Fit-N-Wise. The Eagles won the team title with 616 points — beating runner-up Azle (171) by 445. MICAH MCCARTNEY | WCMESSENGER

The Decatur swim program proved to be ready to jump back in the water last week.

Hosting Azle and Boyd, the Eagles swam to the boys team title with 616 points — 445 more than second place Azle.

Preston Dollins was one of the team’s top swimmers, earning individual gold medals in the 50 butterfly (26.77), 50 freestyle (25.42) and 100 IM (1:03.85).

Dollins also finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.61) with Joseph Delgado, Ace Maxfield and Hagan Aaberg), and in the 200 medley relay (1:54.39) with Caleb McKee, Grant Arthur and Kaden Escobar.

Arthur was a gold medalist in the 100 freestyle (55.98), and clocked 35.47 to pick up silver in the 50 breaststroke.

Max Vanderveer (50 backstroke, 30.49), Ace Maxfield (50 breaststroke, 32.96) and Caleb McKee (200 freestyle, 2:05.25) were the Eagles’ remaining gold medalists. McKee added a silver finish in the 50 butterfly (27.91), while Maxfield finished second in the 100 IM (1:06.54).

Vandereer also racked up a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay (1:43.82) with McKee, Escobar and Arthur, and in the 200 medley relay (1:57.78) with Maxfield, Hagan Aaberg and Delgado, and took third in the 50 butterfly in 29.56.

Delgado secured a pair of silver medals in the 50 backstroke (32.69) and 50 freestyle (28.72), and placed third in the 100 freestyle (1:02.05). Escobar (200 freestyle, 2:14.76) and Hagan Aaberg (100 freestyle, 1:02.69) also added second-place swims.

The Eagles’ remaining bronze medalists were Colt Kline (50 backstroke, 36.49; 50 freestyle, 29.43), Escobar (100 IM, 1:08.64); Landon Carpenter (200 freestyle, 2:36.03) and Malachi Crouch (50 breaststroke, 36.49).

In the girls division, the Lady Eagles dominated with 697 points. Azle scored 426 for second, while Boyd placed third with 36.

Zoey Burkhart swam away with three first-place finishes in 50 breaststroke (35.66), 50 freestyle (27.55) and 100 freestyle (1:00.18). She added a pair of gold medals in the 200 freestyle relay (1:59.55) with Brooklyn Albaugh, Kylee Barthold and Bianca Baires), and the 200 medley relay (2:05.57) with Barthold, Albaugh and Kady Martinez.

Barthold collected a pair of top finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:13.35) and 100 IM (1:10.19), and garnered silver in the 50 backstroke in 32.99.

Jaci Oldenkamp and Martinez were both awarded gold medals in the 50 butterfly after tying at 31.14. Oldenkamp swam second in the 200 freestyle relay (2:00.68) with Jade Ortiz, Angelica Kruder and Laynee Ballou, while Martinez added silver in the 100 IM (1:10.64) and bronze in the 50 breaststroke (37.77).

Ballou claimed silver in the 50 breaststroke (36.54) and bronze in the 100 IM (1:10.92). She also took silver in the 200 medley relay (2:07.34) with Liberty Dollins, Oldenkamp and Ortiz.

Dollins swam second in the 200 freestyle (2:34.71), and third in the 50 backstroke (34.48) and 100 freestyle (1:09.15).

Ortiz was a bronze medalist in the 50 freestyle in 31.25. Ava Parker clocked 3:06.57 for a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle.

Representing the Lady Jackets, Libby Vaughan swam to a gold medal in the 50 backstroke (32.60), and added a bronze finish in the 50 butterfly (31.57).
