After a crash severely injured a local law enforcement officer earlier this month, the community and his colleagues are stepping up to aid him on the road to a full recovery.

Sergeant Bobby Faglie, a motor officer with Boyd Police Department, was struck while riding his patrol motorcycle home Nov. 2. According to Boyd Police Chief Jason Schmidt, Faglie was traveling on Farm Road 1655 before he was struck by a car attempting to turn into a driveway.

“He was airlifted to Medical City Denton with extensive, numerous broken bones,” Schmidt said. “But luckily, his vest saved his internal organs from any injuries like internal bleeding or tears to his organs.”

Faglie underwent a few surgeries upon his arrival at the hospital, and was recently moved to a rehab center for physical therapy to work through his injuries. Schmidt estimates it will be six to nine months for Faglie to make a full recovery.

Although the road ahead for the beloved officer may be a long one, it will not be lacking any support from those around him.

A GoFundMe campaign was started by Justin Todd, Faglie’s former partner at Watauga Police Department, the day after the crash occurred. The campaign had a goal of raising $5,000. As of Tuesday, it was nearing $10,000.

“Faglie has been a motor officer for many, many years, and a lot of those donations have come from the motor officer community,” Schmidt said. “Those guys are a very tight-knit community, and a lot of them were in the hospital with [Faglie] when I got there.”

Although Faglie has only worked for Boyd PD for a few months, Schmidt has known him for 10 years. He said Faglie is a genuine, down to earth person, and you would be hard-pressed to find many officer more helpful than him.

“I know his job as a motor officer is to stop cars and write tickets, but it’s more than that to him. He cares so much about his community, and he’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet” Schmidt said. “When we first met, I was working with him on a regional crash team where we investigated fatal or near-fatal car accidents. The reason he did that was because he wanted to see those victims have some sort of justice.”

Schmidt said that Boyd PD and surounding law enforcement officers are putting plans together to help cover not only Faglie’s hospital bills, but the time his wife, Mandy, has taken off of work to support him. Details of the benefit event will be posted to the Boyd PD Facebook page when they are finalized.
