The long-awaited state debut for Paradise senior Channing Beauvais paid off with a top 5 finish Thursday at the University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Beauvais narrowly missed stepping onto the state podium in her final meet as a Lady Panther, clearing 5-02 to tie for fourth with East Chambers senior Mallory Frederick.
“It was a good experience, and not a lot of people get to come here,” Beauvais said. “Everyone here’s competing for a state title. It’s definitely the best of the best that get to compete here, and I’m happy I got the opportunity.”
Along with Frederick, Beauvais cleared the bar on her first four attempts on the contest to reach 5-02, but missed on all three tries at 5-04. Texarkana Liberty Eylau’s Chloe Ward closed out her career with the sate title with a clearance of 5-05 — beating out Wallis Brazos’ Sophia Vykukal and Stockdale’s Peyton Keller, both finishing at 5-04.
“All of us were at about the same height, which was what I expected,” Beauvais said. “The competition was really good. Coming into state, I was hoping to jump 5-06, which I knew I could do. Today just wasn’t my day, I guess.”
Beauvais’ final jump at the state meet closed a 4-year athletic career at Paradise as a multi-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball and track.
“Being in athletics at Paradise has helped make me very mentally strong,” Beauvais said. “We always work hard every day. The coaches have always told us that it’s not going to be easy. I think they’ve done a really good job of preparing us for the big stuff.”
Paradise coach Hillary Limbaugh said Beauvais has grown up thanks to being apart of Paradise athletics.
“Watching Channing grow into her limbs from seventh and eighth grade and seeing her compete at this stage, I’m just so proud of her,” Limbaugh said. “She competed well, and she had a good mindset going in. She’s been blessed beyond measure, and there’s no telling what she’s capable of doing in the future. I know she’s going to do great things, both in athletics and in life.”
The veteran Lady Panther will jump to the collegiate level after graduation, as she takes her talent to the University of North Texas — Dallas women’s basketball program. She also hopes to get a continue her jumping career as part of the Trailblazers’ track and field program.
“I haven’t decided on track yet, and I probably won’t until the end of the summer,” she said. “But it’s still definitely a possibility for me. I think that I can compete, and I think I can get even better than I am now if I keep going.”
