Cynthia Alvarez and Stan Shults will represent Decatur ISD as trustee Place 1 and Place 2 after Saturday’s election.
The May 3 election brought another contested Decatur ISD board race, as two trustees who previously clashed over the board presidency faced challengers.
Voters ultimately elected one newcomer and one incumbent Saturday.
Cynthia Alvarez unseated Place 1 incumbent Scott Koehler 738-544. Alvarez, a former Decatur ISD counselor who’s active in Spanish-speaking outreach, thanked supporters in a bilingual message after results were announced.
“I’m so happy for the opportunity to serve the district. I feel like this is a win for all of Decatur. I can’t wait to get to work on making Decatur ISD an even better place to learn and work. Love you!” she wrote, adding the same message in Spanish:
“Estoy muy contenta por la oportunidad de servir a nuestro distrito, siento que este es un triunfo para todo Decatur. Estoy ansiosa por ponerme a trabajar en hacer nuestro distrito de Decatur un mejor lugar para aprender y trabajar. Los amo!”
Koehler, an airline pilot, had served on the DISD board since 2022.
Meanwhile, the other DISD trustee on the ballot, board president Stan Shults, held off challenger Michael Stone 655-605.
Shults was also sworn in 2022.
“I am thankful for all the voters who supported me,” Shults said in a text Saturday. “Their belief in me and this district means the world to me. The best is ahead for Decatur ISD with a great superintendent and a board who supports her. Together, our shared work will move this district forward.“
