AISD board names Tefertiller superintendent finalistFree Access

Aaron Tefertiller has been selected as the lone finalist for Alvord ISD’s superintendent position after the school board worked out a few details of the promotion Monday night.

Tefertiller has been managing roles as both Alvord High School principal and basketball coach at Alvord ISD. After coaching at Alvord in 2008-09, he returned to the district in 2016, where he was taken under the wing of current superintendent, Dr. Randy Brown.

“They’ve been good to me here,” said Aaron Tefertiller. “Years ago, Dr. Brown approached me about taking over as principal, and I wasn’t interested at the time. We decided that if I could keep coaching, we’d just reevaluate every year.”

Several reevaluations later, Tefertiller has been selected as the next district leader.

Tefertiller said his mentee relationship won’t end when his promotion and Dr. Brown’s retirement take effect this summer.

“One reason I even put my name in the hat was that [Dr. Brown] was still going to be in the community and a phone call away,” Tefertiller said.

Alvord’s future superintendent was raised in education, but Tefertiller actually wanted to pursue a career as a youth pastor after college. However, he said, life drew him to teaching, coaching, administration, and eventually, district leadership.

His experience also includes facilities coordination and leading successful programs in both academic and athletics. Prior to Alvord, he served in multiple leadership roles including principal, athletic director and coaching.

The board selected Tefertiller as the lone finalist April 6, and finalized the contract April 13.

Alvord school board president Daniel Ruddick said Tefertiller was the best candidate for the job, due to his leadership qualities, work ethic and results, both in academics and athletics at the high school. He said the board also felt that Tefertiller was the best cultural fit for Alvord.

The district announced the hire Tuesday after Tefertiller had the opportunity to inform the staff and his basketball players about the promotion.

Dr. Brown, Alvord ISD’s longtime superintendent, announced his plans to retire after 34 years in education in February. On Tuesday, Brown said he believes Tefertiller is ready to build on the success that he inherited when he accepted the job years ago.

“My job was making sure that Alvord continued to be a great place to work and a great place to learn,” Brown said. “I know [Tefertiller] will build on the strong foundation that was in place at Alvord before I got here.”

Following the state-mandated 21-day waiting period, the AISD school board is expected to take action to make the hire official.

Tefertiller will continue serving as principal through the end of the school year while Superintendent Dr. Randy Brown continues in his role. The district anticipates a leadership transition around June 1.
