3 hurt in Bridgeport ATV accidentFree Access

Three people were hurt — including at least one with serious injuries — Saturday evening in an ATV accident in a Bridgeport neighborhood.

The wreck happened just after 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Vine and 17th streets near Bridgeport Middle School.

Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said an adult female and two children were hurt.

The woman sustained serious injuries, Preuninger said. She was taken to a landing zone at Bridgeport Elementary School where she was flown to Medical City Denton by Air Evac Lifeteam 68.

The two children were taken by private vehicle to the hospital prior to EMS arrival, he said.

Bridgeport Police Chief Steve Stanford the 32-year-old woman — a Bridgeport resident — was operating the four-wheeler with two passengers: a 13-year-old female and a 1-year-old male. He said none of the occupants were wearing helmets.

Stanford said the department is investigating several potential charges, including child endangerment and city ordinances violations.

“The vehicle was being driven recklessly,” Stanford said. “Items located at the scene are concerning to officers and may have played a role in the crash.”

He said his office will await the results of toxicology and test the items, which could be drug paraphernalia, at the laboratory, which could add more criminal charges.

The initial investigation shows the ATV was being operated at an unsafe speed, Stanford said, and the operator drove up on a sidewalk to drive into a yard when all three were ejected. He described the scene as “chaotic,” adding that the wreck occurred at one location, but they drove to another location down the street, which is where the children were taken in a personal vehicle to the hospital.

Responding units included Bridgeport Fire Department, Bridgeport Police Department, Medic 2, Squad 1 and Medic 5 (canceled on scene).
