Medical City Decatur has installed a secure medication drop box to give the public a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused or expired drugs, according to a recent news release from the hospital.

The drop box, located in the hospital’s main lobby, accepts most prescription and over-the-counter medications. It is part of Medical City Healthcare’s and HCA Healthcare’s “Crush the Crisis” program, a year-round initiative aimed at reducing drug misuse and supporting safe disposal practices.

Hospital officials said the service is free and available every day. The box complies with U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations.

“Unused medications left in homes can pose a serious risk to families and the community,” Kristyn Langford, PharmD, pharmacy director at Medical City Decatur, said in the release. “This drug take back box offers a simple and secure solution.”

Medical City Healthcare operates permanent drug disposal boxes at 15 of its North Texas hospitals.

In addition, the Decatur Police Department plans to participate in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, with Medical City Decatur serving as the designated drop-off site. According to the release, the event will include a drive-thru collection area staffed by law enforcement officers who will assist with safe disposal and provide educational materials.

“We’re honored to work alongside Medical City Decatur and the DEA,” Decatur Police Chief Delvon Campbell said in the release. “Together, we’re creating more opportunities for safe medication disposal and raising awareness about responsible practices.”
