One patient was flown from the Chico High School practice football field Tuesday afternoon after being extricated from beneath a nearby house.

Wise County EMS, along with several area fire firefighters, responded to the 800 block of Park Road in Chico around 4:30 p.m. for a man reportedly injured and trapped beneath the home.

“He was apparently working on a pipe under the house,” said Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger. “We don’t know how, but something hit him in the head and caused a traumatic injury.”

The Wise County EMS Rescue-1 crew went under the house to rescue the patient, he said. After a successful extrication effort, the patient was taken to the landing zone just before 5 p.m. AirEvac Lifeteam 68 flew the patient to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital trauma center in Fort Worth shortly after.

Chico ISD officials confirmed that the injured person was not a staff member or student. Air ambulance services use the school site as a landing zone.

Wise County EMS was joined by Chico Volunteer Fire Department at the scene.
