For two sets, it appeared that the bright lights of the state stage may have been too much for the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets Thursday morning. The Lady Yellowjackets found themselves down 2-0 and on the verge of seeing their first trip to the state tournament come to a quick end. Boyd’s rally falls short in five-set 3A semifinal

By Richard Greene

The Boyd Lady Yellowjackets’ season appeared on the brink twice Thursday, facing the defending 3A champions. Boyd dropped the first two sets and then fell down 18-12 in the fourth. But both times, the Lady Yellowjackets picked themselves up off the canvas with stellar defense from Larrin Maxwell and timely attacks by juniors Macee Valtr and Jordyn Todd to ultimately force a fifth-set tiebreaker. The Lady Yellowjackets just couldn’t make a final rally with Goliad, scoring five of the last six points to take the tiebreaker and the Class 3A semifinal at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, 3-2 (25-17, 25-11, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11).

Lindsey Chancellor ditched one of her classes Thursday at Arlington Baptist with a legitimate excuse. After going through a winless campaign her freshman year at Boyd six years before, the college sophomore had to be in Garland to see the Lady Yellowjackets make their debut in the state tournament. “I wasn’t going to miss this,” Chancellor said. “If they win, I’m going to be here on Saturday. “No one thought this would happen. This is a dream come true for the whole town.” When the gates opened at the Curtis Culwell Center at 10 a.m. sharp, it appeared as if the whole community had made the voyage more than an hour east to see their Lady Yellowjackets in action.

Boyd rallies to unseat region champ Peaster

Published Tuesday, November 7, 2017
By Messenger staff

Last year on election night, the Boyd Lady Yellowjackets’ season ended with a loss to the eventual 3A runner-up Peaster. After dropping the first set and falling behind 6-1 and later 24-15 in the second Tuesday, it appeared the Lady Yellowjackets’ challenge to the incumbent Region I champion would fall short again. But behind the serving of Kamryn Frenzel and a frenzied defense, the Lady Yellowjackets staved off set point and began their rally. Boyd won the set 26-24 to get back in the match. Three games later, Boyd ended Peaster’s tenure as region champion with a dramatic victory in the 3A Region I quarterfinal at Jacksboro High School (22-25, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12).

For Decatur coach Clark Oberle, next Tuesday’s 4A Region II quarterfinal is just another match – and another team standing in his way of a second state title. Forget the fact Oberle will know virtually everyone on the other sideline, and that this is one of Decatur’s biggest rivals. It’s merely happenstance the Lady Eagles’ next opponent is Oberle’s old team who he won a state championship with two years ago.
