With a trip to the 4A Region II semifinals on the line, Decatur and Argyle entered the third set all square at one. After getting the first point, Argyle lost control for most of the game, unable to pull ahead of Decatur. Up 20-19, Decatur was on the cusp of taking a commanding 2-1 lead in the match. Then Argyle mounted a rally. Argyle outscored Decatur 6-1 to take the third set 25-20, flipping momentum to knock its old coach Clark Oberle out of the playoffs, 3-1 (25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16).

The match didn’t start how the Decatur Lady Eagles had planned. After dropping the first set 21-25, Decatur and Melissa continued to trade points into the second game, with neither side giving an inch. With a trip to the 4A-Region II quarterfinal and their season on the line, the Lady Eagles needed a spark. Enter Autumn Finney. The senior captain delivered when Decatur needed her the most, igniting a run that helped the Lady Eagles take the second set and then the next two, defeating the Lady Cardinals 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21) to survive and advance.

By the time North Hills Prep had a chance to catch their breath, the Lady Eagles had jumped out to a 14-3 lead with no intention of letting up. On cruise control for most of the match, Decatur rolled to a 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-9, 25-10) in the 4A Region II bi-district match at the Advantage Sports Complex in Carrollton.

Howard’s work ethic, defense key as Decatur looks to make playoff push

This time last year, Decatur High School was not even a blimp on Cidnee Howard’s radar. After completing her sophomore season at Westlake High School, 230 miles away in Austin, Howard and her family moved to Decatur this past June. Along with her father Chuck, who is an assistant football coach at Decatur, the two began a new chapter in their lives. Since then, Cidnee has become an integral part of the Lady Eagle’s volleyball team. In Decatur’s regular season finale against Argyle on Tuesday, Cidnee finished with a team-high 41 digs to help the Lady Eagles enter the playoffs on a high note. She and the Lady Eagles are now preparing to open the playoffs at 7 p.m. Monday with a 4A Region II bi-district match with North Hills at Advantage Sports Complex in Carrollton.

Herculean effort turns Decatur’s Finney into viral sensation

Seeing the ball sailing out of bounds Friday in the third set against rival Krum, Decatur senior Autumn Finney took flight to save the ball. Jumping several feet and diving over a teammate Tayte Helton, Finney somehow not only got to the ball, but sent it back over her head and over the net to keep the point alive. Decatur eventual won the point and the set. Video of Finney’s Herculean effort by Saturday morning turned her into a viral sensation. It has been viewed several thousands of times. She even landed on the ESPN Sports Center’s Top Plays.
